As Black History Month comes to an end, we're remembering our glorious production of Treemonisha, written by Scott Joplin in 1911 but not fully staged until the 1970s.
Treemonisha is about a Black community living in Arkansas in the 1880s and reckoning with the legacy of slavery. Joplin’s musical language draws on a wide range of influences, including ragtime, jazz and African-American spirituals.
Our production, with direction by @cici_stinton and musical direction by @mlynch.conductor , starred @graceoperasinga as the title character, who champions the value of education and forgiveness when forced to face a superstitious and threatening faction within her community.

Happy #WorldOperaDay!
We're proud to be helping to create an opera world that is more expansive and inclusive - in it stories, its sounds, its aesthetics; for audiences and for those on and off the stage who make it all happen.
Here's to an art form that is full of life ✨

And that’s a wrap!
Having stopped off in London, Aldeburgh, Oxford and Great Yarmouth, The Boatswain’s Mate tour came to an end over the weekend. Thank you to the beautiful @stgeorgestheatre_official for hosting our final performance, and congratulations to the whole company for a fantastic run. We’re very proud to have been able to spread appreciation for Ethel Smyth across the UK.
We’ll probably be a bit quieter for the next couple of months, but the work is continuing behind the scenes so please stay tuned 👀
Sadly @josephine_fg is unwell today for our performance at @stgeorgestheatre_official , but we are very lucky to have @hilarycronin8 stepping in to sing as Mrs Waters after having performed the role with us in 2018. Welcome Hilary and thank you for joining us at short notice!

What a pleasure to bring The Boatswain's Mate to @aldeburghjubileehall_ at the weekend. As the site of the inaugural Aldeburgh Festival, it's seen premieres of operas by Benjamin Britten, William Walton and Harrison Birtwistle. We're thrilled that Ethel Smyth is now part of its history too!
