Not in a position to adopt right now, but still wish you could help animals? Fostering could be the answer! 🥰 Janine is one of our amazing canine fosterers, who has now helped various dogs. “We started fostering dogs two years ago, and have fostered five different dogs in that time,” Janine says. “I grew up with dogs, however my partner hadn’t and had never lived with one. Additionally, with our financial position at the time we couldn’t commit to adopting a dog of our own. “Fostering gave us the opportunity to help a dog without taking on a long-term commitment or the financial responsibility, as SPCA provides everything. Two years later, it’s been such a joy – seeing the growth and change in the animals over the days, weeks or even months – and then getting to see them find their forever homes at the end of it.” ❤️ Fostering also frees up space in our Centres, so that we can help more animals when they need us most. If you’re on the fence about fostering for SPCA, let one of our experienced foster parents tell you more about the experience 🙏 “I started fostering after losing my own dog – the house felt so empty without her, and there was a long-stay dog at the Centre who needed a break,” says Johannah. “I knew I could provide a calm, quiet foster home for dogs who find the activity and noise at the Centre overwhelming. “These photos show Hank, who was brought into SPCA by an Inspector. He needed some time in foster to learn how to live in a house, which he quickly mastered! Saying goodbye when they get adopted is always hard – but then I see how happy and loved they are in their new homes, and I can help the next dog who needs fostering.” ❤️ Providing a short-term home to an animal in need is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Everything you need is provided for you by SPCA, including pet food, bedding, toys and medication (if required). Our team can help match you with an animal that suits your lifestyle. Did you know that chickens are the most commonly farmed animals in New Zealand? This is why improving their welfare is so important 🙏 Through SPCA Certified, we work with farmers and industry to raise standards and support systems that give chickens better lives. Among other things, our standards ensure more space inside the shed, the provision of platforms for perching and roosting, and access to enrichment items to peck and explore. All member farms are independently audited extensively every year to ensure the standards are being followed ✅️ We know Kiwis care about how animals are treated, and we’ll keep working on incremental progress for as long as animals are farmed in New Zealand. Meet Dory, a sweet girl with a big personality but an even bigger love for life 🩵 Her first year was incredibly tough. She was found weak, anxious and fighting a serious illness. One of our Inspectors brought her into our care, and she tested positive for parvo. Despite everything, Dory never gave up. Day by day, she slowly began to regain her strength and show her beautiful big personality 🥰 Today, Dory is healthier, happier, and finally getting the fresh start she deserves. She is a little shy around new people to begin with, but as soon as she feels safe, her fun and goofy side shines through. If you are looking for an adventurous, loyal companion with a big heart, Dory might be your perfect match. Meet her on our site! Happy #TransformationTuesday Dory!

With thousands of animals coming into our care in the lead up to winter, we need more foster homes! 🙏 Fostering is perfect for those who want to make a difference for vulnerable animals, but can’t make the long-term commitment of adopting. When you foster, everything you need is provided by SPCA, so there’s no cost to you. Some animals need to spend time in foster to recover from injuries or surgery, while others may just need time to come out of their shells, socialise, or experience a loving home for the first time ❤️ In order to meet demand and ensure we can free up space for more incoming animals in our Centres, we need an additional 250 foster homes for dogs and puppies, as well as small and farm animals too. If you can provide a short-term loving home to an animal in need this winter, learn more and sign up via the link in our bio!

This Mother’s Day, will you help their mum? Maia was brought into SPCA with her five newborn pups. She hadn’t been receiving the food she needed for her nutrition and theirs. The pups had green diarrhoea and nasty coughs. Maia didn’t have adequate shelter to keep her and her babies safe, warm, and dry. Although their ailments were soon fixed with antibiotics and a worm treatment, Maia and her pups still needed food and shelter, rehabilitation, and love ❤️ After spending time at the Centre and then in foster care, the pups were soon ready to move into their forever homes. Maia needed a bit more time to come out of her shell and discover the joyful, cheeky, and confident goofball within. Please help celebrate all the mums – two- and four-legged – this Mother’s Day, with a donation so that mums like Maia can receive the support they need for them and their families. Horse, pony, and donkey owners across New Zealand are reminded of an important change in animal welfare legislation coming into effect! From 9 May 2026, hot branding of horses, ponies, and donkeys is now illegal in all circumstances ❌️ This change reflects a move away from a practice known to cause significant pain and distress, and towards more humane identification methods such as microchipping.
