spæs Lab Berlin in cooperation with Sound Studies Lab Copenhagen is delighted to invite you to a workshop under the working title “Towards Critical Immersion Studies”, to be held at Studio N324, TU Berlin and online on Monday, 18 May 2026.
Immersion has become a pivotal concept in the creation and experience of sound and sensory artifacts in the early 21st century.
It is discussed from the perspectives of media technology and history, musical aesthetics, the poetics of sound art, critical theory, the anthropology of the senses, and multi-sensory design. Rather than settling on a single definition, we treat immersion as a genuinely multifaceted concept — one that generates critical reflections on the functions, practices, technologies, and imaginaries surrounding what immersion is, was, should, or might (not) be. This broader scholarly and artistic inquiry is what we are calling Critical Immersion Studies.
This workshop is conceived as an intimate gathering of researchers, artists, and practitioners who share an interest in these questions and servers as a first step towards a larger follow-up symposium, planned for Copenhagen in summer 2027.
