5 - THE ALCHEMY of CREATIVITY: METAPHYSICS, MENTORS & VISUAL STORYTELLING by Chip Sullivan
Chip Sullivan's 7th-grade art teacher gave his landscape painting a C+. His mother went to the principal, and the grade became an A.
That's the energy behind The Alchemy of Creativity, Sullivan tracing his creative life back to a father who drew Disney characters from memory, and a grandfather whose model train layout was detailed enough to make you feel physically small standing over it. The real mentors, it turns out, weren't in any classroom.

5 - THE ALCHEMY of CREATIVITY: METAPHYSICS, MENTORS & VISUAL STORYTELLING by Chip Sullivan
What if drawing is actually a portal into another dimension? Sullivan traces this idea through two mentors, Wally Wood, who illustrated artists as literally creating doorways between worlds, and Jack "The King" Kirby, the Marvel legend who drew cosmic landscapes of the mind by unrolling giant sheets of paper on the floor. Sullivan connects their approach to visual world-building directly to how landscape architects think about design and storytelling.

2 - MOVING THE SPIRIT BY SHAPING THE EARTH by David Meyer
David Meyer walks through the redesign of a suburban park where the original retention ponds were eroding and filling with silt, functional in concept but unremarkable in reality.
The client wanted something grander, and an artistic approach to climate. Meyer Studio responded with a series of sculpted earthen vessels built from earth and dry-stacked limestone, refined through basswood models at 1:360 scale. At the north end of the Greenway, a linear vessel narrows at one end to fit its site. A row of columnar oaks frames it on axis with an existing cottonwood...

4 - LANTERN by Tom Leader
The center of Tom Leader's Lantern, seven concentric rings of nylon, cable, and mist, is ethereal and a cultural symbol at the same time.
A maze with no answer. Just the joy of the search.

4 - LANTERN by Tom Leader
You enter through a bamboo forest. You turn. And suddenly you're lost in a spiral.
Tom Leader's Lantern is a maze of seven concentric rings — each one echoing the cross-section of a bamboo stalk. People disappear and reappear between the walls. You can reach through and touch a stranger's hand, but you can't see them. At the center, a mist lantern waits.

2 - MOVING THE SPIRIT BY SHAPING THE EARTH by David Meyer
Heartwood extends the role of landscape as infrastructure into the current era of a transforming climate. Throughout the site, art and natural elements are fused in both monumental and intimate ways. The monolithic limestone blocks that compose the basins, indicate datums of changing inundation volumes. This ability to mark time can help shape memory, foster awareness and connection to the natural world – capturing the constant and increasingly seismic changes that the community might be otherwise unaware of. Heartwood aspires to build climate change infrastructure that might help people see what is being done to our planet.

Tom Leader @tlslandarch designed Lantern for the Chengdu International Horticultural Exhibition 2024, a garden installation built from seven concentric rings of white mesh, 4 meters high, sitting in the middle of a field like something between a sculpture and a landscape.
The structural challenge was real: the frame needed to be slender enough to feel weightless, but stable enough to hold its shape in the wind. Standard bracing would have killed the lightness. So Leader looked to the city itself for the answer.
The Jinsha Sun Bird is a 3,000-year-old bronze artifact from ancient Shu culture — four birds in flight, circling the sun in a perpetual spiral. It's been Chengdu's symbol for millennia. That spiral form became the structural logic: metal braces sweeping across the tops of the frame in the same rotational pattern, tying everything together without adding visual weight.
The form of the garden came from the same place. Cut open a stalk of bamboo, hollow at the center, layered walls wrapping around it, light passing through. That cross-section became the concept: seven rings of mesh around a glowing core, fog rising from below, the whole thing shifting as the light moves across it through the day.
Chengdu gave this project everything. Its oldest symbol. Its most familiar plant. Its quality of light.

4 - LANTERN by Tom Leader
Lantern is a garden installation built from concentric layers of mesh, each one catching and reflecting light differently as you move through it. The structure had to feel weightless without being fragile, so the team developed a system of thin vertical metal rods with the mesh tied around them in a circular sweep. To handle the wind without the whole thing going rigid, the tops of the poles are braced together, a flexible frame that absorbs rather than resists.
Garden shows are rare in the way they work. The timeline is compressed, the brief is open, and there's room to bring years of accumulated thinking into something immediate. Lantern is that kind of project.

4 - LANTERN by Tom Leader
Cut a bamboo stalk open and you find a hollow center. Build that idea up at the scale of a park, and you get something like this.
Tom Leader's Lantern is a terraced earthwork in China shaped by the cultural resonance of bamboo — a symbol of humility that runs deep.
