I used to come home from every dive with a card full of fish butts. I was chasing every fish I saw - pointing and shooting and hoping for the best.
But then I realised that the best way to observe a fish - and photograph one - is to become a fish.
And it's because I stopped chasing them.
I stopped trying to photograph every fish I saw.
I stopped pointing and shooting and hoping for the best.
After 18 years underwater behind a camera, I've learned that the fish always wins the chase.
But when you slow down, move with intention, and let them get used to your presence - they stop fleeing.
And that's when the real shots happen.
This is why you keep getting fish butts. The fish isn't the problem. The chase is.
The way to photograph fish well is to let them come to you. Swim past slowly, then again, getting slightly closer each time until they can see you are not a threat.
Then approach. Slowly.
Because when a fish relaxes in your presence, you don't have to chase it. You can take your time, choose your angle, and get exactly the shot you want. 💙
