Travelogues is an Expanded & Slow Cinema screening comprised of views from hotel balconies and sidewalks from travels across the world. With scenes unfolding from Japan, Portugal, Cuba, Denmark, Chile, and Spain that present the audience with the chance to observe and anticipate everyday streetscapes of foreign cities.
In an age defined by speed, distraction, and relentless motion, Travelogues invites viewers to slow down and witness the subtle poetry of everyday life, inhabiting the space between Expanded Cinema and Slow Cinema where duration is not mere time but a medium in itself—shaped by patience, attention, and the open-ended possibilities of human perception. This is not about scenes of obvious drama, but of emergence and accidental choreography. Life unfolds in the quiet revelations that surface when we simply wait and observe. The work is a collaboration between filmmaker Kevin Nikkel and composer Jesse Krause whose original composition and live performance accompanies the screened footage.
With an opening act titled Lux Spectaculum—a soundless light performance with eight set ups by artist Comocont and Anthony Valade.
Artist Biographies
Kevin Nikkel is an independent filmmaker and writer based in Winnipeg. His documentary films have reached international audiences through festivals, television, and on the web. His location shoots to produce more mainstream documentaries, and vacations abroad with family, too often leave him wanting to capture gradual moments of beauty and quiet that are more suited to the Expanded Cinema form.
Jesse Krause is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator in the city of Winnipeg. His work spans many genres, including folk song, progressive rock, choral and chamber music, and, music for film. Born to a minister/farmer and biologist/artist, his writing is free but practical, equally rooted in the spiritual history of Western wisdom traditions and the concrete wonderment informed by scientific inquiry. Never straying far from his love of the natural world, his work is an expression of affection and gratitude for the created order.
