Common Woods is included in the Architecture in the Netherlands Yearbook 2025/2026. We’re honored to stand among the exceptional projects that defined architecture in 2025/2026. A big congratulations to all our colleagues who were also showcased.

Space&Matter is looking for two motivated architecture interns to join our team. We have two start dates available: one in June and one in September. We are looking for candidates who can ideally commit to a 6-month internship.
We’re looking for a curious, hands-on intern who is ready to dive into the world of architecture and design. Its a plus if your interested in PR and communications about our work.
You’ll get insights from projects of different scales and various phases while working alongside an enthusiastic team in our Amsterdam office. You can expect collaboration, creativity, and plenty of moments where learning happens by doing.
If you’re driven, imaginative and excited to contribute, we’d love to see your work. Send us your portfolio with the possible starting date to [email protected]

Cammino Giallo - The yellow path
A new child daycare
Submission for a competition in St.Gallen, Switzerland.
Our design for the new child daycare aims to integrate sensitively into the existing landscape: Three freestanding volumes playfully shape a central interior space that invites the greenery to flow through. Wooden shingles and copper window frames form a distinctive architectural language within the city’s composition. Both materials will be transformed visually by the different weather conditions.
Not only the exterior reacts directly to its surroundings. The interior also shapes its space carefully around the needs of the children: safety, spatial freedom and engaging interior designs that encourage imagination and curiosity.

Circular Urban Principles sketchbook
How to genuinely embed circular urban design into the process of urban and public space designers? There’s a lot of goodwill to design sustainable cities for the future, but design processes need new approaches to turn circular ambitions into reality.
Together with the Space and Sustainability department of the municipality of Amsterdam, we organised a series of workshops to collectively come up with this manifesto for circular urban design. Participants included urban designers, architects, public space designers, policymakers, and experts on sustainability in the built environment. The outcome of the workshops, alongside an ongoing conversation between all the different design disciplines, was a sketchbook that offers a framework built on eight powerful principles for circular urban design, grounded in collective insights and innovative ideas.
With experience in circularity and sustainability across both single-plot projects and larger, urban-scale neighbourhoods, we always try to incorporate one or more of the circular design principles in our projects.

We are very happy to welcome Sarah to our team at Space&Matter!
After completing her bachelor’s degree at ETH Zurich, Sarah joins us in our office as our new architecture intern, eager to gain hands-on experience and explore professional practice in depth.
When asked about her expectations, Sarah shared:
“During my studies, I didn’t work with many different model-making tools, and my first experience with 3D printing was quite challenging. That’s why I’m especially curious to improve my 3D skills here, since it’s a helpful instrument that we use in the early design stages at Space&Matter. I’m ready to take on the challenge. Wish me luck!”

Woensdag 8 april gaan we in gesprek met architecten, initiatiefnemers en toekomstige bewoners van De Vlinderhaven, een nieuw woongebouw op centrumeiland voor én door de queer gemeenschap. ⤵️
Over queer representatie in de bouwsector.
En over een grotere vraag: hoe ontwerp je een plek waar mensen écht naar elkaar omkijken?
Kom ook!
Tickets zijn gratis, wel even aanmelden via de link in bio 🔗

During the Havenkwartier supervision meeting for our Silo project in Deventer, we put the little 3D printed version of the building into the 1:500 model of the urban plan for this area. Its on show in the city hall to inform the public about the future developments.
Seeing the scalemodel of Silo in the context of the havenkwartier shows how the building, and its industrial references, communicates with its surroundings.
The last slides shows a former animal feed mill in Zwolle, a nearby city, of which we will re-use a structural I-beam framework for a series of actual silos. This will become the loadbearing construction for our building.

A warm welcome to our new architecture intern Caluna. She will be joining our team for the next 6 months at Space&Matter in Amsterdam. After her bachelor graduation at the Architectural Association in London she wanted to get a glimpse into working life.
Caluna: „It’s interesting to have a reality check after your bachelor’s in a positive way. On my first day at Space&Matter they told me about a pink brick sandcastle that we as an office want to built. So afterall working as an architect can still be creative and dreamy.“

Over the past year, we’ve been evolving the Space&Matter brand to reflect the architecture we design. In an increasingly complex world, we aim to create buildings that are intentional, pragmatic, and deeply rooted in their context — and above all, designed to adapt over time. Our visual identity and website are an expression of these same values.
In the words of our art director: ‚We built a visual identity and website that is pragmatic, adaptive, and intentionally simple — one that grows with us. By keeping all visual design and coding in-house, we ensure that Space&Matter’s two-dimensional and three-dimensional work remain in constant dialogue with each other.‘

Our interactive Strandeiland model playfully shows our concept: A clear layout that shapes our neighbourhood into individual sub-communites. Each of them has its own beach related theme regarding to nature, biodiversity and materialization.

Along with our design partners ZUS and NL Architects, we have developed a nature-inclusive urban design for the southern neighbourhood Muidenbuurt, located on Strandeiland in Amsterdam. The plan includes 215 new homes: a mix of social segment, free/mid-rent segment, and privately owned housing. While strengthening the community with common buildings and a shared hub, the focus lies on energy self-sufficiency, circularity and sustainable building materials for the buildings.
