Celebrating my guy Robert Morris today. I realize posting this first pic will likely consign me to dying alone, but Rob would get a kick out of it (RenFaire nerds unite!).
He deeply believed in the power of play, and mucking about only amplified and channeled his restless intellect and ribald humor. This is a guy who had the stones to fabricate an obscure French novel, for which he delivered a tour de force oral report, maybe or maybe not in his iconic bathrobe and top hat, I can’t recall, but I do remember his grade (A). He did it not because he was impudent (maybe), but because the challenge tickled him.
He’d be appalled by the sense of seriousness we’ve accumulated as we’ve aged, like so many coats of heavy paint. I can hear him telling me to fuck the status quo man, put down those heavy things in your mind, and to make room for some play. Oh, and make his Sunday Sauce bolognese. Happy birthday, old pal, wherever you are.

Of the many things I’ve been grieving, one of the silliest is the loss of 51 keys. Since relocating/de-locating unexpectedly to SoCal I’ve been confined to my lil’ 37-key Arturia controller. Well, my brother has his too, so technically we’ve been writing with 74 keys. Still: less than a full battalion. But it’s amazing how liberating constraints can be! (Who am I kidding I wish I had 88 keys again.) In the meantime, get your ears on some good stuff.
