an encouragement for Jiu-Jitsu parents and coaches for #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
You don't have to be a mental health professional to ask your kids about how they're doing emotionally. About how they're feeling about themselves, their relationships, how school and training are going.
Being genuinely curious, caring and open to listening can help them open up.
Gen. Z kids especially value to feel safe and heard on one hand.
On the other hand, a lot of them haven't been equipped to communicate or share what's going on internally, especially the ones that are struggling,

Happy Birthday to my Baby, she's 22 years today!
You are amazing, I love you Grace!
I can't believe how quickly you've grown up.
One more month till graduation, let's gooo!
😃❤️
Today I'm feeling really grateful for being a part of A New Day Counseling Center for almost 14 years, here on the campus of @westernseminary
I'm making a change next week to join @living_wholehearted in Lake Oswego.
It's been incredible to be a part of the team here and to see a grow. We've done a lot of hard, good work with clients in these rooms.
Why does it seem like God heals people and free them from addiction or ongoing struggles instantaneously and for some people it takes months or years?
On different types of healing.
This page is for you if…
You track “emotional regulation”… and your heart rate while getting smashed.
You’ve ever said “stay present” while absolutely not wanting to be present in knee-on-belly.
You believe in exposure therapy… especially to pressure, sweat, and inevitable taps.
You process your feelings… immediately after rolling hard for 6 minutes.
You reframe “I’m getting crushed” into “this is a growth opportunity.”
You’ve considered adding “guard passing” as a clinical intervention.
You understand attachment styles… and still can’t escape side control.
You say “notice what’s coming up for you”… while someone is literally coming up under your hips for a sweep.
You value boundaries… except when someone is cross-facing you into another dimension.
You’ve thought, “this is just like couples work”… while stuck between two people drilling.
You regulate others all day… then go get dysregulated on the mats.
You know the nervous system… and yours still panics when they grab your collar.
You’ve mentally diagnosed your rolling partners mid-round (but with love 😄).
You call it “somatic work”… your coach calls it “don’t get swept.”
You’re working on “letting go”… especially of submissions you refuse to tap to.
You’ve used the phrase “lean into discomfort”… and then immediately regretted it during sparring.

After many meaningful years at A New Day Counseling Center, I’m excited to share that I’ll be transitioning my practice to Living Wholehearted Counseling beginning in April.
I’m deeply grateful for the relationships, growth, and community I’ve experienced at A New Day and Western Seminary. It has truly been a place of formation for me as a counselor and person.
I've been here almost 14 of my 20 years of counseling! 🤯
At Living Wholehearted, I’ll continue working with individuals and couples around emotional health, relationships, spiritual formation, and sleep-related concerns.
And eventually help with individual and group supervision.
Exploring school options for next year?
If you’re a homeschool family looking for support, community, and flexibility, I highly recommend checking out Alliance Charter Academy (K–12 in Oregon City).

We've had a great experience there — Julie has taught science there since 2018, and both of our younger kids went through the program from elementary through high school.
Want to learn more?
👉 Start by attending the free info meeting on April 7th to get on the waiting list.
