Last week I took some time to visit the Cyrus The Great (Kourosh) statue at Nimrooz Park. His legacy is one of justice, freedom and tolerance as the ruler of the Persian Empire. What he is holding is “The Cyrus Cylinder, issued in 539 BC, widely considered the world’s first charter of human rights. It declared freedom of religion, abolished slavery, established racial equality, and allowed displaced people to return home, influencing modern human rights laws (aka our Constitutional “Bill of Rights”).

Our country, people & history has influenced & contributed so much to the world as we know it. In these difficult times, it felt peaceful and proud to be reminded of our roots. To be reflected in a positive light, instead of just hearing war & repression in Iran. I urge everyone to take a moment and visit this site and read the scriptures edged into all four sides of the stones.

It’s been a rough week emotionally. This record arrived just in time. Released in 1973, “Gole Yakh” (Ice Flower) by Kourosh Yaghmaei (known as the Father of Persian Psychedelic Rock) still carries the yearning of a generation for freedom. My mom gave me a copy of this album some 15 years ago on CD. I was amazed by the instrumentation, melodies, originality and Kourosh’s voice. It just spoke to me instantly.
The samples on this entire album are a producer’s dream. Kanye sampled this song for Nas’ “Adam & Eve” track in 2018. Some 50 years later and his music still persists. Just to show you how resilient & creative our culture is.
