CURRENTLY FYNDING: OVRKAST. 🔍
The rapper-producer Ovrkast. (@ovrkast ) has emerged in the 2020s as the foremost example of the crossover potential of “Abstract Hip-Hop” and Trap. The Oakland-born and Brooklyn-based artist combines punchy drums and sharp snares alongside jazzy keys and soul samples to create a modern sound for fans of luminaries like Madlib and J Dilla.
His aggressive rapping style regularly sounds like he has a chip on his shoulder, while retaining an emotional edge to his voice. He’s become a fixture of forward thinking rap music that can be enjoyed by all stripes of Hip-Hop fans, and he’s become an in-demand producer, landing 2 placements on Drake’s “Scary Hours” deluxe album.
“I’ve learned with writing to just let go of trying to be perfect. It’s better to just say the thing because I’ve been trying to get into my storytelling bag.” - @ovrkast via @billboard
Following his breakthrough 2020 album “Try Again,” Ovrkast. has steadily released singles and projects that have evolved his sound. He’s transitioned from being grouped into the ambigious, often maligned “Lo-Fi Hip-Hop” subgenre to creating a sound unique to him.
That evolution coalesced on his 2025 album “While The Iron Is Hot,” a 13 song project packed with tracks that range from drumless confessionals (“SPIKE LEE”) to horn-laced bangers (“Small Talk”). Fittingly, the project features peers like MAVI, Saba, Vince Staples, Malaya, Frsh Waters, and Samara Cyn.
