When you start looking into diving in Costa Rica, you quickly hear about Catalina Island — and the manta rays that are often spotted there between December and April. Mantas have been on my diving bucket list ever since I saw them from a boat in the Galápagos.
Since we’d been wanting to visit Costa Rica anyway, we planned a week of diving on the Pacific coast near Playas del Coco, from where trips to Catalina Island depart. Unfortunately, during four days of diving we didn’t see a single manta — and not much else either, as visibility was really poor. The ocean was rough with big waves, strong currents, and lots of wind, stirring up sediment and turning the water into a murky soup rather than crystal-clear tropical blue.
Once again, we were reminded that nature can’t be predicted — and certainly doesn’t follow a travel brochure. Still, we had an amazing time, gained lots of new experience, and are already looking forward to our next diving adventure!
