One of the finest examples of Tiffany Studios' “Wisteria” lamps, inspired by Louis C. Tiffany’s love for the flowering vine, is heading to #SothebysNewYork. It’s a highlight, in the truest sense of the word, from A New Vista: The David and Shoshanna Wingate Collection.
Clara Driscoll, the head of the studio’s Women’s Glass Cutters Department, reimagined Tiffany’s beloved plant into a leaded glass lamp shade in 1901. It instantly received critical acclaim and was deemed a “marvel in construction and color.” By 1905, the lamp was a best-seller for Tiffany Studios.
The Wisteria lamp in the Wingate collection incorporates over 2,000 pieces of Favrile glass. It showcases the talent of the “Tiffany Girls” in selecting that glass, available in a near-infinite number of colors or color combinations, for the exact desired purpose. Through this revolutionary design, Louis C. Tiffany and Clara Driscoll transformed their aesthetic ideals into iconic works of art.
The Wingate Collection will be part of the Modern Evening Auction on 20 May. Register to bid at the link in bio.

One week ago, this Louis XVI velvet carpet whipped up a bidding frenzy to the tune of €268,000 during the Collection Jean-Marie Rossi d’un monde l’autre auction at #SothebysParis. The six-figure result, more than triple its low estimate, reflects the incredible provenance of the piece.
In 1789, French actress—and one of the mistresses of the Count of Artois—Anne-Victoire Dervieux commissioned the architect François-Joseph Bélanger to redesign her home on Rue Chantereine. This d'Aubusson carpet was intended for the music room and echoed the decor of the ceiling. According to Russian writer Nikolai Karamzin, "This house is considered by everyone to be a marvel. You need a ticket to visit it."
After escaping a grim fate during the French Revolution, Dervieux sold her Parisian residence and all its contents, including the carpet, to Belgian Count Vilain XIII.
