i took the photo that would become the alt cover for TREE OF LIFE while on a boat floating somewhere on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan in the summer of 2001. this is where I go when my eyes close, almost always. we debated using this as the main album cover but chose to make it the front cover of the 12 page booklet included in the deluxe vinyl edition. sidenote: "salty water" is @thanksjoey 's favorite song on the album. TREE OF LIFE out everywhere and best experienced in the physical on wax. 🌴

on a sunny and happy tuesday, september 19, 2023 @thanksjoey and i dug through old Egyptian records from his grandfather’s private collection and landed on an unsealed gem which happened to be one my favorite songs of all time. a few chops, some drums and a bass line later we had an upbeat and celebratory song about family called Olive Leaves. Tree Of Life was born as a project meant to be full of mostly joyful letters to our children as a guide to life. a month later on october 14 we were back in the studio and the world had changed — the genocide of the people of gaza was underway. we questioned everything about the project as we had planned it. what message should it carry, what should the mood be, what role could it play, etc. over the next two years we carefully crafted a project we are both so proud of. Tree Of Life is a musical expression of hope, love, prayer and reflection. more than just dope beats and rhymes, and more than just messages to our kids, it is a letter to beating hearts around the world and we hope it stands as a testament to the power of faith and steadfastness in the face of increasingly ugly daily realities faced by too many people. it is a reminder of our place in the much grander scheme of time through reference of and contextualization in nature.
