White Picket Chair (2026). Assembled from the flashy, ready-made stainless steel components found on the fences and gates across New York City’s Asian and West Indian neighborhoods, White Picket Chair challenges the idyllic image of the “American Dream” from an immigrant perspective. Sometimes safety is physical. Sometimes it’s emotional, cultural, spiritual, or shaped by memory, ritual, and repetition. Meet the final six architect-makers in Safe & Sound — our @nycxdesign exhibition with @leroystreetstudio exploring refuge through furniture, photography, sculpture, and domestic objects: ▸ Randy Armas Moreno (@r.armas.art ), using polaroid photography as an act of grounding, self-love, and resistance during moments of uncertainty and unrest. ▸ Rohan Cherayil (@rjcherayil ), drawing from Indian miniature traditions to explore home as something carried through stories, memory, and migration. ▸ Stephen Muir, merging the comfort of a bed with the structure of a chair to create a place of softness, support, and rest. ▸ Han Seungmin (@sonny.han ), transforming the iconic stainless steel fences of immigrant New York neighborhoods into furniture that questions safety, aspiration, and belonging. ▸ Vanessa Tai (@__lintel__ ), hand-stitching leather vessels that hold personal objects while reflecting on the difference between “home” and “house.” ▸ Yinqing Zhu (@itch_chin ), reimagining Chinese ceramic traditions through digitally embossed metal forms where ornament becomes protective structure. May 15 · Opening Reception · 6–9pm @allenstreetgallery · RSVP link in bio.

We took a stroll through Sunset Park with furniture and object artist @sonny.han , passing rows of flashy stainless steel fences where the idea for “White Picket Chair” first took shape. Originally mass-produced in China in the 1980s, these components spread globally for their affordability, low maintenance, and customization. In New York, they became a familiar marker across Asian and West Indian neighborhoods, often seen as signifiers of immigrant community presence in New York City. To bring the piece to life, Sonny worked with Sean and Jay from @brookstasteel , using those same ready-made parts and reassembling them into something more personal you can experience up close. #sunsetpark #brooklyndesign #nycart

A familiar NYC streetscape gets a second life through Brooklyn-based artist @sonny.han . With White Picket Chair, Han Seungmin transforms the stainless steel fences seen across Sunset Park and Flushing into something intimate and tactile. By bringing this familiar symbol of status indoors, the work invites a reflection on identity, community, and the American Dream from an immigrant perspective. Each piece is made to order, with just four chairs available. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the New York Immigration Coalition. 📸: @genehan , @sonny.han #brooklynart #nycart #sunsetpark #brooklynartist #interiordesign

White Picket Chair (2026). @osvipepe is on the fence about this whole situation while @maxgoldner helped big time coming up with the name for this piece.

White Picket Chair (2026). The components that make up the chair are the same modular, mass-manufactured parts that make up the fences and the railings. While the chair’s decorative finials and arched, emblemed rails resemble the familiar fence, the additional posts at the front and ribbed tubes connecting to the back add unlikely dimensionality. Hwa, Mok (2025). Partially charred white oak. The name, Hwa, Mok, Is a bit of a word play in Korean. It refers to the two elements that make up the piece—fire (화, hwa) and wood (목, mok) but it's also a nod to the word for harmony (화목). This monolith works as either an oversized incense holder or a tea candle holder. I was thinking about the tension between rigid and regulated geometry and the unpredictability of fire when making this one.
