We have Silurian era ferns to thank for these star shaped fossils, each of which are a segment of the stem of a prehistoric sea plant. We spent several days on the beaches of Hiiumaa, painstakingly unearthing them from piles of rocks.

Aegna is an island right off the coast of Tallinn. It was first used for military purposes by Peter the Great and last by the Soviet Union for anti-aircraft rockets. The blueberries growing around the silos were tart and lovely.
For the first time I visited the forest my grandfather grew up in. The animals his father hunted in the woods sustained their family through the food shortages of the World Wars. We focused on more stationery targets, and I brought a bucket of mushrooms home to my grandmother so she could show me how to process them. They were delicious cooked with cream and spooned over potatoes from my grandmother’s garden.
