From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ Been eyeing this one for a WHILE… as I continue rebuilding my record collection one album at a time, couldn’t resist purchasing this album again unless it was the one done by @mobilefidelityofficial ! Produced by the legendary Robert John ā€œMuttā€ Lange (my all-time favorite producer!!), there’s even more clarity in the soundstage, more punch, more dynamics… Thomas Dolby’s keyboard/ synth work on songs like ā€œUrgentā€ have even more atmosphere. @lougrammgram sounds super dynamite of course! As with all MOFI releases, I find this to be the definitive / go-to way of listening to this classic album moving forward. šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ Happy 30 year anniversary to one of my all-time favorite albums ever! ā€œSlangā€ by Def Leppard. Originally released on May 13th 1996, this album put its hooks in me from day 1 of discovery. As an already massive Leppard fanatic, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, and immediately this album lets you know it’s not what’s to be expected from this band… ambitious, their most experimental album… one I find to be a masterpiece. The band proved they could write proper tunes without producer ā€œMuttā€ Lange’s supervision / Midas touch… yet sonically this album is also incredibly rich, although it goes for more earthy tones… it’s quite the adventure, as you can hear everything that the band was listening to at the time filtered through them, whether it’s Boys II Men one minute, Nine Inch Nails another… Prince… and even a Sarangi is used! This album is quite brilliant, in my humble opinion. Thankful for its existence. šŸ™šŸ»

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ As I continue rebuilding my music collection one album at a time, I’m totally ecstatic to have my favorite @muse album back! ā€œDronesā€ is turning 11 years old next month, and it still packs a punch! I waited on the edge of my seat in anticipation for this album for months leading to its release, and a major reason driving my excitement was due to it being produced by the legendary Robert John ā€œMuttā€ Lange! (My all-time favorite producer). Interestingly enough, the blend of producer + band is a bit more balanced here than what I expected… while there still are some of ā€œMuttā€ā€™s trademark sounds on here, it’s more on the subtle side… what we do get is a super well-recorded album with a lot of weight. The band hired ā€œMuttā€ Lange to get back-to-basics, and emphasize more on the guitar, bass, drums dynamic… leaning in towards his extraordinary work on ā€œBack in Blackā€ā€¦ which was more so about getting stellar performances with not too much overdubbing. I can’t rave about this album enough… and it’s been long overdue for a marathon listen! As I haven’t given it a proper listen in what feels like ages. šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ Last week marked 36 years since the release of ā€œCharmed Lifeā€ā€” @billyidol 4th studio album (originally released back on April 30th, 1990). Significant because it was the first album to feature guitarist @markyoungersmith who brought more of a blues-based esthetic to Billy’s sound, yet still mixed incredibly well with the dance / electro / pop hook realm that defined Billy’s sound (alongside stellar producer Keith Forsey). To my ears, this album brought back more of a band-centric sound / execution in contrast with the more hyper-electro soundscapes of the previous album (ā€œWhiplash Smileā€). This album has aged really well for me… it’s incredibly well-sequenced with personal favorites including: • Pumping on Steel • Trouble With the Sweet Stuff • Love Unchained This is the right kind of album to blast after sunset… ecstatic to have this recent reissue on 2 LPs. šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ If anyone should know ONE band that impacted me at a monumental level in my formative years, it’s The Cars! Ric’s quirky cool / Buddy Holly-influenced vocal style & lyrical charm, Benjamin Orr’s heart & soulful voice complimenting Ric’s wonderfully (the yin to his yang), Elliot Easton’s memorable guitar attack / memorable solos (they were songs within the song!), Greg Hawkes’ hyper hooky synths, and David Robinson’s in the pocket kick… what a band! They had the songs… and they influenced so so many: from Weezer to No Doubt… to Bad Brains and Smashing Pumpkins. @billjanovitz did a phenomenal job writing this book— covering the entire story of the band, and its members— past, present & future (side projects included!). I’m now reading this a 3rd time, and looking forward to many more. If you want to open your eyes to the thrill ride that is @thecars & their music, this book is the perfect compliment to have while listening to their albums through & through! šŸ

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ Happy 1 Year Anniversary to ā€œDream Into Itā€ ! Billy Idol’s 9th studio album and one that as a mega Idol fanatic has grown on me over the last 365 days. Originally, this was intended to be an EP— but in true Idol fashion, @billyidol decided to just go all-out and craft a full-length album. Amongst the things I still appreciate about this album… So mind-blowing to hear the title track sample Alan Vega & Martin Rev’s ā€œDream Baby Dreamā€! The songs & overall atmosphere of this album goes for more of a straight-up pop/punk feel, and of course @stevestevens continues to add a super kinetic kick to everything. Truly the best. As always, Billy & Steve bring an unforgettable uplift to my life that is second to none. šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ Duran Duran has always meant a lot to me. From my earliest memories of listening to them, their songwriting, mature songwriting (even during their early years) and avant-garde / otherworldly nature always connected to me. Now, the 90s was an interesting period for the band— by 1993, the band had reinvented themselves and evolved with guitarist Warren Cuccurullo making a major impact on their songwriting— adding further dimensions to their already fluid yet concrete style. I can go on & on, but look— the ā€œWedding Albumā€ is still a stunning album to listen to, and I’m glad I got ahold of this new reissue, alongside its companion ā€œThank Youā€, which was recorded during the same sessions as the former— with the band reinventing songs they admired in their own unique ways. Their take on Bob Dylan’s ā€œLay Lady Layā€ is massively underrated… I tend to play it back-to-back with ā€œCome Undoneā€. Brilliant stuff. šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ The rebuild continues—welcoming another essential chapter back into the collection: Marathon by @saga_band , their fifteenth studio album. Released in the spring of 2003, this album stands as a key moment in the band’s rebirth era—where everything that made SAGA so distinct comes back into focus, while still feeling naturally in step with its time. What makes Marathon especially fascinating is how it came together—more piecemeal in its creation—yet somehow, it flows with a cohesion that feels anything but fragmented. If anything, it adds to its character. There’s a beautiful cross-section here of everything I love about this band… the melodic depth, the subtle complexity, the sense of uplift woven into every corner. And vocally—this is some of @michaelsadlermedia at his finest. ā€œBreathing Lessonsā€ and ā€œYou Know I Know (Chapter 12)ā€ in particular showcase that unmistakable ability he has to inspire, to ground, & to elevate all at once. Another meaningful piece restored—one step closer to bringing it all back. Stay curious… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶

From my Sonic Dorm to yours… šŸŽ¶šŸšŖšŸŽ¶ My conversation with the legendary Marco Pirroni is now live on the official Sonic Dorms YouTube channel — and also available anywhere you stream your favorite podcasts. This one means a lot to me. Marco’s guitar playing and creative voice had a tremendous impact on my formative years, and his role in shaping so much of the Adam Ant sound is impossible to overstate. There was always something singular about his style — fusing punk energy with glam-rock spark and a raw melodic edge that was entirely his own. He was also extraordinary in SinĆ©ad O’Connor’s band during the first two album eras, both as a guitarist and co-writer, helping shape another body of work that still resonates deeply (listen to his brilliant guitar work on songs like: ā€œJerusalemā€, ā€œMandinkaā€, ā€œJump in the Riverā€). Getting the chance to speak with one of my guitar heroes was a genuinely meaningful, full-circle moment. . . . . #marcopirroni #adamant #sinĆ©adoconnor #newwave #adamandtheants
