The word community gets thrown around a lot in a city like Los Angeles, but honestly, there’s no better word to describe the magic that @midcitymercado has created. At a time when individualism is rampant, the space built by the @persona.theshop @mariscosmarias and @midcitymercado team over the last few years is something truly special. It’s an authentic testament to the genuine impact and power of connection, creativity, and culture. What they’ve created, both literally and metaphorically, is a place where people from all identities and backgrounds can come together. It’s provided so many opportunities for all of us. At a time when gentrification is rapidly reshaping and erasing historically immigrant neighborhoods, @midcitymercado remains a purposeful force, pushing back and strengthening the threads of community that still run deep. After years of being powered by volunteer efforts, @midcitymercado is now officially becoming a 501c3 nonprofit. This shift allows them to expand their work, offer sustainable programming, and provide living wages for their team, while continuing to nurture and grow the community. To celebrate and support this transition, they’re hosting their first Legacy Gala this weekend. It’s a multi-media art exhibition and fundraiser honouring the long-standing Black and Brown businesses that have shaped LA and provides much-needed support. Anyone who knows me (or has followed my journey as an artist) knows that this community has been integral to my own growth and sense of belonging here in LA. If you moved to LA from somewhere else, you’ve ever been impacted by the work emerging from this space, or you simply believe in the power of the collective and culture, I encourage you to make the time to attend the Legacy Gala or exhibit this weekend, or consider donating to @midcitymercado ‘s fund. 2025 has been a tumultuous year for LA, and as individualism and colonial values continue to threaten our communities globally, it’s crucial that we protect and preserve spaces for connection, joy, and culture. Link in @midcitymercado bio for tickets & donations ⭐️ See you there xx
