What is somatic movement?

Hi, Iโ€™m Jodi. Iโ€™ve been teaching movement in Melbourne for seven years and have recently completed my diploma in somatic movement therapy. Dancing from a young age, Iโ€™ve always used movement as a means of personal expression, exploration, release, and regulationโ€”and it warms my heart to share the gift of movement with the Soma Practice community. I started Soma Practice to offer somatic practices and embodied movement classes, workshops, and personalised online sessions. My goal is to help you discover the strength and grounding that comes from being embodied. Embodiment involves sensing and connecting with what it means to be in a body. At times, this journey can be challengingโ€”sometimes uncomfortable and confronting. However, in a supportive environment and with the guidance of a trusted instructor, it can lead to deeply enriching connections with oneself and others. My intention is to build a movement community that is supportive, encouraging, and inclusiveโ€”where everyone feels welcome. If youโ€™re interested in exploring somatic movement, strengthening your nervous system resilience, and expressing your Soma in a more connected way, come try a class and sense the benefits of somatic movement for yourself :) I look forward to moving with you x Photography by @chloesobejkophoto

Jodi is back ๐Ÿค๐Ÿค One of our most loved teachers returns for a seasonal pop-up โ€” a 75-minute winter Soma Practice. Introspective, grounding, restorative. Across 75 minutes, we move through a grounding movement flow - less about pace, more about presence and stability. Winter's practice draws on strong holds and strength in stillness, to build internal warmth. Movement that invites you to ground rather than force. Throughout the practice, we return to the spine as a supportive structure and as a centre of inner knowing and interoception. Rooted in somatic principles, winter is understood as the body's season of deep replenishment, a time to nurture, quiet the nervous system, and restore. This practice honours that. Youโ€™ll also receive a curated bundle of somatic meditations to take home and continue your exploration. Suited to all experience levels, beginners encouraged. Jodi offers many adaptations to her movement classes- but noting that the room is on level 2 and only accessed via stairs. SEASONAL SOMA PRACTICE Saturday June 6th 9am - 10:15am $30 Link in bio to book xo

~๐’”๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’„ ๐’”๐’‰๐’‚๐’Œ๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ~ When we pause and listen to our Soma, sometimes we may notice subtle embodied cues guiding us to moveโ€”tiny vibrations, energy bubbling beneath the skin, or ripples flowing through the bodyโ€ฆ a mobilised energy wanting to be expressed. Through soft ๐’”๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’„ ๐’”๐’‰๐’‚๐’Œ๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ and intentional exploration, we can invite these natural movements to expandโ€”supporting the body to release held tension, express energy, and return to a sense of grounded ease. As you explore this, a gentle invitation to begin with a slow, steady rhythmโ€ฆ and then let your Soma guide you. Movements may grow or soften, expand or slow downโ€”following what feels most supportive. Knowing that if this isnโ€™t the movement for this moment, you can always pause and return to it later๐Ÿค The words shared here are inspired by ๐’”๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’„ ๐’”๐’‰๐’‚๐’Œ๐’Š๐’๐’ˆโ€”a guided practice youโ€™ll find in the ๐‘บ๐’๐’Ž๐’‚ ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’Ž๐’† library on my website. Wow, just wow. My soma is so full after the most delicious time facilitating somatic workshops at @restival.retreat ~ a weekend of movement, breath, nourishment, and sound. And best of all, connecting and co-regulating with the most divine humans. A big thank you to @zev_tropp for creating such a magical experience, and to @conscious_practice for your knowledge and playful creativity. This is just the beginning. If you couldnโ€™t make it over the weekend, thatโ€™s okay, thereโ€™s more to come. Make sure you follow @restival.retreat to stay updated on future events๐Ÿค

This is how I plan classesโ€”outside, along the creek, moving, exploring, creating shapes among the trees. What feels most connective about expressing my soma in nature is the co-regulation I experience with the natural worldโ€”the sense of support, inspiration, and reciprocity with our Earth Body. Finding todayโ€™s inspiration from the whispers of the wind and the rhythm of water, creating somatic movement for ๐“ฃ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ ๐“ฅ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐“ญ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฝ ๐“‘๐“ธ๐“ญ๐”‚, a workshop Iโ€™m co-facilitating with my friend Albee @conscious_practice at @restival.retreat this weekend. If you have a ticket to @restival.retreat Iโ€™m looking forward to sharing these movements with you! Otherwise, if you ever happen to see me cutting shapes along the creek, come say hello :) you are always welcome to join me!

Why do ๐’ˆ๐’†๐’๐’•๐’๐’† ๐’“๐’‰๐’š๐’•๐’‰๐’Ž๐’Š๐’„ ๐’Ž๐’๐’—๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•๐’” support nervous system settling? Many of our most effective regulating practices are already within us. From early life, rocking and swaying are embedded in our cellular memory as natural ways of self-soothing. The steadiness of these movements offers consistent, predictable sensory input. This communicates a sense of grounding through the bodyโ€”softening our somaโ€™s rhythm, slowing the heart rate, and gently guiding us toward a state of calm. These simple, accessible rhythms can be used anytime, anywhere. We carry them within us. If you feel curious to explore guided rhythmic techniques, visit ๐‘บ๐’๐’Ž๐’‚ ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’Ž๐’† via my website (somapractice.com) or follow the link in my bio. On the last slide, Iโ€™ve shared a few moving meditations that incorporate ๐’ˆ๐’†๐’๐’•๐’๐’† ๐’“๐’‰๐’š๐’•๐’‰๐’Ž๐’Š๐’„ ๐’Ž๐’๐’—๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•. Sensory ๐“ฐ๐“ต๐“ฒ๐“ถ๐“ถ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐“ผ on my walk this morning: ~birdsongs ~textures of wood ~little creatures ~rhythms of water ~flutters of a butterfly ~sun on my skin ~dewdrops on grass ~whispers of the wind The term โ€˜๐“ฐ๐“ต๐“ฒ๐“ถ๐“ถ๐“ฎ๐“ปโ€™ in somatics refers to the little moments of joy, those simple daily pleasures that spark creativity and connection - to self, others and to the natural world. You may be familiar with the term โ€˜triggerโ€™, which can send your nervous system into overwhelm and activation. ๐“–๐“ต๐“ฒ๐“ถ๐“ถ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐“ผ are the opposite to triggers, they encourage a sense of ease, calm and shift your nervous system towards a regulated state. When I come across a ๐“ฐ๐“ต๐“ฒ๐“ถ๐“ถ๐“ฎ๐“ป itโ€™s a chance for me to pause, slow down and take a moment to appreciate something beautiful. This as an opportunity to check in with my body, observe any sensations and be present in the moment. My gentle invitation to you is to move through your day as it is, with an openness to your sensesโ€”even if itโ€™s just for five minutesโ€”taking small moments to pause and notice the ๐“ฐ๐“ต๐“ฒ๐“ถ๐“ถ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐“ผ around you ๐Ÿ’š
