Upcoming Exhibition >> “In particular” Duo show by Ryota Watanabe and Roger White On view: 2026.4.17 - 5.17 (13:00 – 19:00 (Wed-Sun) *closed on Mon, Tue SOM GALLERY は、4月17日（金）から5月17日（日）まで、James Baeがキュレーションを手がける、渡邊涼太とロジャー・ホワイトによる二人展「In particular」を開催いたします。 学問分野の中で、これほど似ていながらも認識論的に大きく異なるものは、数学以外にほとんどないだろう。こう考えてみてほしい。数学の一方の側面、すなわち応用数学は、橋の安定性を生み出す日常的な実務を支え、世界の銀行システムを動かす離散的なコードの構造的実装を支え、あるいは例えば朝のオムレツを作るための材料の分量を調整する。もう一方の側面は、基本的な機能を持たず、したがって実用性もなく、ただそれ自体の既存の在り方を垣間見せること以外には何の役にも立たない。純粋数学は、実際のところそれ自身を映し返すこと以外の意味を持ちえない。そしてそれゆえに、この種の数学の学位は理学ではなく芸術の領域で授与されるのだ。 多くの数学者は、1955年に谷山豊と志村五郎によって提唱された谷山・志村予想（現在では証明されたことによりモジュラリティ定理と呼ばれる）こそが、現代数学において最も衝撃的な問題であると語る。この予想は、その前提として、楕円曲線とモジュラー形式という、当時はまったく相容れないと考えられていた二つの数学分野の同一性を提起した（目の前にある平らなドーナツの幾何学が、同時に第四次元における高度に対称的な関数形式としても存在するとはどういうことなのか、そしてその逆もまた然りなのか）。 その難解さと、解決不可能だと思われていたことに加え、提唱者の一人とその婚約者の突然の死が、この問題にさらなる不可解な名声を与えた。したがって、この問題の歴史を、人間自身の本性によって課される問題、それぞれが独立して無限に創造的な可能性でありながら、その謎めいた繊細さによって結びついているものと切り離して考えることは難しい。 そもそも予想とは、ひとつの思考にすぎない。それは努力の先に検証があるかどうかを示唆するものではなく、その価値は、成功の有無にかかわらず、さらなる不確実性を生み出すことにある。谷山・志村予想のような問題に取り組む理由は、「そうしたい」あるいは「そうせざるを得ない」以外には存在しない。 こう考えることもできるかもしれない。ある数学者に、この予想を簡単に説明できるかと尋ねたことがある。長い沈黙の後、彼は静かに「できない」と言った。さらに長い沈黙のあと、コーヒーを飲み終えた彼は、もう一杯頼んでいいかと尋ねた。日が暮れ、人々がテーブルを行き来する中で、彼はまるで独り言のようにこう言った。 「1950年代にこの予想を考える感覚を表現するなら、自分は暗く等方的な空間にいる画家のようなものだ。固定された軸もなく、描くための平面すら見えない。私は頭の中で、描かずに描き、自分の過ちを暗闇の中で描き続けている。何に辿り着くのかもわからないままに」と。 「それでも、その“本質”は、ここにある草や空気のように確かに存在しているのだ。」 （文: James Bae)
