I’ve been pasting poems I love in my day books and journals for years. Here are Ada’s crows who have come to give me the new. “It can’t be good” the poem says. And Forrest Gander’s astounding “Post-Fire Forest” in which “Cindered/utterances in a tongue from which/ everything trivial has been volatilized,/everything trivial to fire.” Check out the New Yorker poetry podcast where these poems are featured. Thank you Kevin Young. Amazing as always.
My sun-streaked Olivetti that I use for letters and notes to friends. It too has been an old friend, and during the throes of COVID I had my weekly list of recipients. It continues.
“Americans will always do the right thing—after they have exhausted the alternatives.” Much debated quote by Churchill, but I thought it was perfect for Gov. Newsom. Congrats!
From my department of shameless self-promotion: I couldn’t be more delighted to have these two poems appear in the new issue of BOMB. With heartfelt thanks to Betsy and Ben and the entire BOMB editorial squad. Happy 40th!
