Hi Friends! (SOLmates? š)
We're so excited to release our first (of *hopefully* many) animated shorts to help explain a number of concepts in a quick, consumable, visual way. This first one explains the primary concept behind our Performance Mixes, and why they work better indoors than traditional potting mixes. Spoiler alert, traditional potting mixes weren't actually designed for indoor conditions, more so repurposed outdoor or greenhouse grower mixes and marketed them for indoor use (completely different conditions, i.e. - those are ideal growing conditions; your kitchen isn't).
Our amazing illustrator @megantegeder is a MN local artist and has done a ton of great work for our friend Jessie @tonkadale over the years. (Nice find Jessie!)
Let us know if you like this new format or tweaks we should consider to make them more impactful. If there's something you wish we could boil down and make easier to understand for new and seasoned plant parents alike when it comes to plant care, we're going to start documenting your ideas from emails, website live chats, IG DMs, comments, etc. for future videos!
Grow Happy Plants!

Bird of Paradise donāt always look stressed when they need a new pot ā sometimes they simply run out of space.
Signs itās time to size up include roots circling the pot, soil drying out faster than usual, slowed leaf growth, or the container starting to feel tight and unstable. When roots donāt have room, the plant canāt support continued healthy growth.
Moving up just a couple inches and refreshing the soil gives roots space to expand and helps the plant stay strong over time.

Needed one little terrarium supply, so I had to try @rootsinbloom.marion to see if maybe they had some activated charcoal laying around with a price tag⦠they didnāt, currently, but they did happily order me two bags! The best, just go there.
Oh, and the flower bar room is INCREDIBLE right now!
Then these two found me & both needed me, obviously.

Plant Lingo ā a series for new plant parents
Ever hear someone say you need chunky soil and nod along... secretly having no clue what that means?
Youāre not alone. Todayās term: Chunky Soil
What it means:
Chunky soil is a potting mix with large, irregular particles (like orchid bark, coarse perlite, pumice, and coco chunks) that create visible air pockets. Non-chunky soil is dense, fine-textured, and compacts around roots ā think straight peat moss, vermiculite, sand, or standard garden soil.
These two mix types have completely different effects on root health. Chunky soil allows oxygen to reach the root zone and water to drain quickly. Non-chunky soil holds moisture against roots and suffocates them over time.
Why it matters to you:
If you keep your houseplants (especially aroids, hoyas, or monsteras) in non-chunky soil, you are dramatically reducing their chance of success. Dense mixes lead to:
Ā· Root rot
Ā· Yellowing leaves
Ā· Fungus gnats
Ā· Stunted growth
Ā· Suffocated, mushy roots
Even a healthy plant with strong roots will decline quickly in the wrong mix. Chunky soil is not just ānice to haveā ā itās the difference between thriving and dying for many popular houseplants.
What to do about it:
When potting or repotting your houseplants, use a true chunky mix ā not regular potting soil alone. Hereās how:
1. Buy or mix your own chunky blend: Combine 1 part orchid bark, 1 part coarse perlite or pumice, and 1 part coco chunks or quality potting soil as a base.
2. Test it before using: Squeeze a moist handful ā it should fall apart immediately, not stay in a clod.
3. Do not use: Straight peat moss, fine coco coir, vermiculite, sand, or gardening soil as your primary mix.
4. When repotting water propagations: Only move them to chunky soil once secondary roots have grown on all primary roots and the root system is strong. Then pot into chunky mix, not dense soil.
Switch to chunky soil, and your roots will finally breathe.

This plant was so heavy it broke its pot! Itās all fixed up and ready to be sent home with a new pot, fresh dirt and a clean haircut! Some houseplants are just too challenging to handle at home š and this big beauty was one of them. With some fresh fertilizer from sol soils itās only going to get bigger and better from here!
