Side by side. Solomon Osayi Roller, Solomon Irein Ona Wangboje (Grandpa). When I first saw these pictures side by side, I was genuinely surprised at the similarities. The smile that we share is something I can’t get over because for the first time, I could see myself in you. That’s a new gift. I talk to you every single day even though we never met in this life. But this year you’ve felt closer than ever. I’m so proud to be your namesake. You were the first history of myself that I ever learned as a kid, and my name has been a heirloom of honor ever since. A pioneer of contemporary Nigerian art, one of the first modern printmakers of Nigeria, educator, scholar, & humanist. The artwork in the background of both photos is from his series “Man, Mask, and Myth.” Last summer, I remember moving a bunch of three-dimensional paintings for the Nigerian artist Adewale Adenle here in Atlanta. When I asked him if he knew of Solomon Wangboje, he stopped, turned to me, & very seriously said “of course I do”, like it was out of the question not to. Then he said “If you are a Nigerian artist and do not know Solomon Wangboje, then you do not know African art.” I took pride in hearing that. But more than anything, I know I have inherited his heart. And I am most proud of that. Love you Grandpa, Ima keep growing this goatee so that we’re twinning

RETURNING. I always wondered if I’d find my way back to the guitar, back to singing and performing the songs I love. I had to live some life to figure out how I wanted to show up in the world. Over the years, my mom always told me to never stop singing, to always keep my instruments with me even if they went neglected. I get now the importance of that. I had walked away from it because it had stopped feeling like mine. It felt corrupted by other people’s expectations of how I ‘should be’ and I had little guidance. But I’m so grateful I listened to myself. I didn’t rush myself to arrive anywhere on anyone else’s timing but my own. I’ve returned to it, and it’s mine again. Gasprices - (cover art: @sapphinaroller ) The day that I wrote this, so much emotion surged through me and something unlocked when I arrived at these words, this feeling. My deeply personal experience at that moment about how I felt about the world and where I was suddenly crossed the threshold into the collective experience. Something is on the rise and it’s been burning in my mind with the clearest mesh of colors. Even as things look dismal right now, there is a power in recognizing that things are changing, things are shifting and it’s because people know the price of life is high! And with that knowing it’s necessary to take action. Something IS on the rise. What’s gonna happen next? That is the most exciting part, it does not have to rest in the darkness because it is unknown. More than anything, I want you to listen to this song and discover what it invokes for you. The way this song came together is the type of magic you hope to find every time when it’s time to create. The spirit of collaboration is a reminder that no matter our role, we need each other to discover what we’re capable of.
