Three students who helped organise the College’s Community Iftar back in March were invited to tea with the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Annette Mackenzie yesterday. Thank you for having us and for letting our learners try on your robes!
A level Geography students stepped just off campus yesterday to complete some fieldwork in the Alderbrook River. They were investigating the success of the restoration project to re-wild the river channel and its floodplain. The project aims to reduce the risk of flooding downstream and to repair the ecology of this stream as it runs through Brueton Park, Solihull. Learners had mascot Bertie the Beaver with them on the trip!
Plants are proven to have a positive impact on mental welfare. With this in mind, we’ve been selling plants in the Refectory today to boost our learners’ wellbeing. Aloe Vera, Sunflowers, Spider Plants, Tomato plants and more have been on sale for £1 with all proceeds going to Samaritans for Mental Health Awareness Week.
Two A level Chemistry students achieved Gold Awards in the Chemistry Olympiad. Theo Scott and Sophia Thom and were presented with their certificates from Principal Martin Sullivan this week, as was Marigold Adu, who achieved the Bronze certification. Sophia was the highest ranked student of 10 who got awards, and her score was high enough to have the paper sent off to the @roysocchem .
Congratulations to Wafi Hanafee, who was recently named as a finalist for Young Leader of the Year at the Inspirational Youth Awards. Wadi met with College Principal Martin Sullivan this week to talk about the achievement.
Congratulations to Year 13 student Daina Donnelly for being named an ambassador for the RGK Wheelchairs was part as their collaboration with @englandathletics . Daina is a talented athlete who competes in the wheelchair 100m, 400m and 800m and she will soon be travelling to Switzerland, where she will represent England Athletics at the Nottwil Para-Athletics Grand Prix. Good luck Daina!
A group of Year 12 students have joined the Team Gambia volunteer project and will be travelling to The Gambia to volunteer at the Abuko Lower Basic & Nursery School later this year. Before that, they are running events to raise money for the school and yesterday that took the form of a karaoke, sweet sale and raffle event. Well done to all involved as they raised £104.
There is an Interview Evening at the College tomorrow night. This is strictly by invitation only and will see more prospective learners being made offers to study A level, BTEC and T level courses with us in September. For those who have not yet completed their application or booked their interview, please act soon, as our last interview evening is on 23 June.
