On the 1st of May we celebrate International Workers’ Day to remember the struggles that workers, both men and women have fought to demand fair wages, decent working hours, equal pay, the right for different types of leave, the right to join unions and to engage in industrial actions, the right to find a fair work-life balance and so many other fights over the years.
⚠️ Still, despite all the struggles and the achievements that workers managed to obtain, workers today still experience exploitation and unjust working conditions, which leave a negative impact on their quality of life.
@movimentgraffitti has been voicing its concerns about workers’ rights for many years and in May 2024 it launched its Campaign – Justice for Workers – as the government continues to fail workers in Malta, failing to enforce and upgrade safeguards, to raise wages adequately and address new exploitative realities such as the gig economy. It also failed to adequately enhance work-life balance measures as mandated by the EU.
Despite steady economic growth, the Maltese labour market depends heavily on cheap labour, with workers continuing to receive relatively low wages, facing exploitation and other hurdles especially if they are migrant workers.
👉
@movimentgraffitti believes that salaries at the bottom of the pay structure need to be revised and increased, general conditions of work improved across the board, and policies implemented so that all workers will be able to achieve a proper work-life balance.
👉 We also believe that workers should participate in decision-making that affects their life work. Workers are not machines to be used and abused at will. Workers deserve the dignity, the rights and the monetary compensation that enable them to live decently.
🔴 On Friday 1st May join us between 11:00 and 15:00 at Ġnien l-Għannejja Żwieten for FESTA ĦADDIEMA 2026.
