🌱 Soil literacy starts with people ready to share it.
Between 28 November 2025 and 20 April 2026, The Living Soils Workshop trained 21 Soil Lab Activators online through The Soil Journey – Living Soils Workshop Trainings.
The goal?
To prepare SoilTribes partners to become facilitators and bring the Living Soils Workshop methodology into their local communities.
Through this training, Soil Lab Activators strengthened their capacity to support future activities on:
🌿 soil awareness
🧠 soil literacy
🤝 community participation
📍 local engagement
🌍 soil health
The expected impact is the delivery of at least two Living Soils Workshops in local communities, helping more people connect with soil through participatory and educational activities.

One of the biggest threats to soil today? Chemicals.
From pesticides to industrial inputs, what we add to the soil can slowly harm it.
Borut Jerman, President at @pinakoper , highlights how chemical use is impacting soil health and is affecting its ability to support ecosystems, food production, and long-term sustainability.

Beat the summer heat by covering the soil to cool the root zone! 🌡️
Mulch with straw or bark to retain moisture and shield roots from scorching temps.
Cooler soil, thriving plants.

Every year on 9 May, Europe Day marks peace, unity, and the spirit of working together across borders 🇪🇺
For SoilTribes, this message feels deeply connected to our mission: building bridges between science, technology, arts, and communities to restore our relationship with soil.
Because healthy soils are not only an environmental issue. They are connected to our food, climate, biodiversity, culture, economy, and well-being.
On Europe Day, we celebrate collaboration, shared responsibility, and the people taking action for a more sustainable future.
Rooted in action, growing together 🌱

🌱 What does soil restoration look like in practice?
On 29 April 2026, the SoilTribes Community of Practice gathered online for its 6th Meet-Up, dedicated to soil health, food quality, and climate resilience.
The session brought together around 30 CoP members and members of the public to explore how healthier soils can be supported through Living Labs, farmer collaboration, creative technologies, and community-driven action.
We heard from Maria Leonor Gonçalves Pereira about the @livingsoill project and its work with farmers in vineyards and olive groves, addressing challenges such as erosion, compaction, low organic matter, and nutrient imbalance.
We also heard from Lot Amoros, who explored how art and technology can support soil restoration, from drones and seed balls to the Green Barriers initiative.
The conversation reminded us that restoring soil takes more than technical solutions. It requires trust, long-term support, mindset change, and practical examples that communities can see and believe in.
And our community remains rooted in action 🌍

What if soil could speak?
In this video, @ppatricia.carvalho , Consultant at @inova.business_ , gives soil a voice and reminds us that our relationship with it is not one-sided. It is a balance.
The way we care for soil shapes the future of our food, our environment, and our well-being.

On 05 March 2026, SoilTribes was presented at the @ecsa_community 2026 Conference in Oulu, Finland, during the panel:
“Cultivating Knowledge Together: Removing Barriers in Participatory Agricultural Practices.”
The session brought together 50 participants from academia, NGOs, and other EU-funded projects to explore citizen science in the agri-food sector.
During the panel, projects were presented through symbolic objects:
🥔 PataFEST: citizen engagement activities in Berlin
🧲 @foster.food.system : collaborative food systems innovation
🥄 @soiltribes : a soil testing initiative for citizens
🪤 @cerberusproject.eu : pest control through data collected from farmers, citizens, and educational centers
For SoilTribes, this was an opportunity to share how participatory approaches can connect citizens, farmers, and communities with soil-related knowledge and action.

Attract worms to naturally aerate your soil! 🪱🌱
Add organic mulch, such as leaves or compost, to draw them in; they’ll tunnel and improve drainage effortlessly.
Healthier soil starts underground.

What does soil have to do with the future of our cities? 🌇
On 4–5 November 2025, @cluj.napoca hosted a SoilTribes Twinning Programme Visit, welcoming representatives from @nantesfr for two days of peer learning and exchange.
Together with universities, private sector actors, soil experts, the Pedology Institute, and local community members, participants explored how soil health connects to:
🏙️ urban regeneration
🌍 climate resilience
🏞️ biodiversity
🌳 sustainable horticulture
🏢 resilient city planning
The programme included field visits to the Rivus regeneration site, the peri-urban area of Sălicea, and the Gheorgheni Plant Nursery.
The exchange showed how municipalities can become key connectors, bringing together diverse actors to protect soil and rethink how cities grow.
Soil is part of the city’s future.
And action starts from the ground beneath us.

Soil is the root of everything. 🌱 Simple. True. Essential.
Eva Frade, Project Coordinator at @platoniqfoundation , reminds us that soil is where life begins by supporting the food we eat, the ecosystems we depend on, and the balance of our planet.
👇Write in the comments what soil is for you in simple terms.

Remembering the rhythm of the Entrudanças festival 🎊🎶
A few months ago, SoilTribes joined the festival in Entradas, Castro Verde, during our consortium meeting and 5th Community of Practice Meet-Up.
Now, we are sharing a video with moments from those days: dance, music, local traditions, creativity, and community coming together.
Organized by @pedexumbo.oficial , with the @municipiocastroverde and the Junta de Freguesia de Entradas, Entrudanças reminded us that connection to soil can also be felt through culture, movement, and shared experiences.
