It is truly difficult to comprehend extinction. What does it mean to lose a species which has evolved over millions of years in exquisite adaptation to its habitat?
I have experienced the diminution of populations of insects, frogs, birds and trees in my own lifetime, the span of which marks the beginning of the environmental movement and also more than half of the world’s contribution of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. I cannot find the words to describe the loss, and I am existentially nauseated to think that I am part of the first generation to witness a mass extinction event in their own lifetime
