10 YEARS OF SOFT IDIOT POST
today marks 10 full years from the release of the first soft idiot album and the birth of the project as a whole! that album was called “life is boring” and you can’t hear it because it is bad. but very important to my development as an artist and as a person!!!
my freshman year at temple university was the loneliest of my life. i was going through my first breakup and blinking in the weird fog of early college pre-adulthood. i somehow had no idea that the biggest transition of my young life to that point would be difficult and different. i started this band in the tradition of early to mid-2010s bedroom pop, overly confessional and circumstantially lo-fi. it was what i needed then. i made two records in that dorm room, both embarrassing but necessary steps towards what would become my “life’s work.”
with my proverbial heart on my sleeve and arrogant diy ethics as my sword and shield, i forged onward and faced my greatest fear: making friends as an adult. i met cullen through some hometown friends, and mike offered to step in on bass when he overheard us mention we needed a bass player in class one day. when i asked sagar to play keys, he obliged without telling me that he didn’t really know how to play the keyboard. i didnt tell him that i didn’t really know how to play the guitar.
eric stepped in for our first tour and has stuck around since. when sagar moved away, david stepped in on bass while mike moved to guitar. terrin moved to town just in time for mike to move on. not to mention the many other friends who have been enlisted for fill-ins along the way: dave, rob, charlie, now joey and maybe even you reading this one day… <3
10 years in, i can say that i still have no idea what i am doing and i feel, in fact, profoundly lost. and im happy to be here!!! it seems like life and art are all about grappling with and embracing change- that’s all i’ve ever really written about. and also community! who we change with and who we change into. big questions with no answers. wandering through the mist into fog into smoke into haze and etc. forever and ever. im very lucky to do that with people who i love.
the day approaches! first full band show in a minute on 10/19 at Cousin Danny’s with @slimer_ing@slopingband and @dumbangelband and were very excited to see you again.
this weekend also marks 10 years since the start of this project. wow! one decade of soft idiot
bringing back full band soft idiot for one night only (for now)!!!! had to pull out all the stops to celebrate the philadelphia date of @slimer_ing and @slopingband ‘s tour which @dumbangelband and we are providing local support for. 10/19 at cousin dannys in west philly!
