'My relationship to softness is best exemplified by the object of the patchwork quilt. Patchwork quilts are generational surfaces that have allowed for immense creative expression and demonstrated mind boggling resourcefulness, all the while with the intension of keeping you warm. Discomfort is never too far from the quilt. In fact, I would say that the quilt has a firm and stable relationship with discomfort. The discomfort formed from feeling the cold is what brought the quilt into being in the first place. Simply put the quilt acts as a barrier, which on the one side works hard at keeping the cold at bay and on the other allows for an intimacy and physical proximity to exist where the body is able to be warm. For me softness lies just as much in its opposing context as it does in its definition. ' via No.6 contributor Hana Steenbergen @hanna_steenbergen_cockerton
