May marks 5 years of living in barcelona. As long as I can remember I always had the feeling I wanted to live here one day. In 2021 I finally went, 0 expectations. What was supposed to be 6 months - maximum 1 year quickly became 5 years. My family and friends were right when they said ‘you’ll never come back’. Here I am, still in Barcelona and feeling more home than in the country I grew up and lived for 23 years. These 5 years shaped me. It’s crazy how you’re able to build a whole new life, new routines, find your new favorite places and most of all gather a new circle of beautiful people around you. Living abroad is not always easy and comfortable in many ways but it makes you grow. I’ve went through some downs and sure felt home sick at times. Had to miss some things at home. However I also met a lot of lovely new people, learned about the spanish culture, made new friends, appreciated some dutch things more than ever, got new perspectives, got to know myself more, fell in love with a catalan, learned how to be independent and take care of myself and so on. I’m so happy I followed my dreams and gut and feel like I’m on the right path surrounded by lovely people. Honestly if you ever have the chance to live abroad, take the opportunity and enjoy it to the fullest. It might be for you, it might not but one thing is sure you’ll grow & have a beautiful experience. I would do it over a hundred times <3
