Sad Snake – Captive in the Old Ménagerie – Urban Animal – Paris 2017 The architecture of the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes is undoubtedly beautiful and reminiscent of an era long gone and as such, entirely inadequate for keeping wild animals in the 21st century. The animals are treated as decorative objects, kept in extremely small enclosures for mere human amusement. Does the snake appreciate the beautifully painted forest on the wall? I created this series in 2017 and nothing has changed since. The vertical panoramic formats are reminiscent of decorative wallpaper or poetic scrolls which enhances the absurdity of the scene. Take action and sign the petition for the closing of the menagerie des Jardin des Plantes. Since 2019 association @associationpaz is fighting to have this place of animal suffering closed and the animals placed in appropriate sanctuaries. Please help them by signing the petition – link in bio / L’architecture de la Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes est sans aucun doute raffinée, elle rappelle une époque révolue et à ce titre totalement inadaptée à la préservation d’animaux sauvages au 21e siècle. Les animaux sont traités comme des objets décoratifs, gardés dans des enclos extrêmement petits pour le simple amusement humain. Le serpent apprécie-t-il la forêt magnifiquement peinte sur le mur ? J’ai réalisé cette série en 2017 et rien n’a changé depuis. Les formats panoramiques verticaux rappellent des papiers peints décoratifs ou des volutes poétiques renforcent l’absurdité de la scène. Captured in the wild in Borneo at the age of three, Nénette has been confined to the Menagerie for 53 years, without ever touching a tree! Captive in the Old Ménagerie no.5 – Urban Animal – Paris, 2017 It was in 2017 when I first visited the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes. I was utterly shocked to see the conditions of how animals are kept in this zoo in the heart of Paris. The zoo dates from 1794 and hasn’t changed much since. The enclosures are extremely small and many animals, like the primates, have no access to the exterior. Since 2019 association @associationpaz is fighting to have this place of animal suffering closed and the animals placed in appropriate sanctuaries. J’ai été profondément choquée par les conditions de vie des animaux dans ce zoo situé en plein cœur de Paris. Le zoo date de 1794 et n’a guère changé depuis.
