This is taken from Debussy’s song Spleen, the final song from his cycle Ariettes oubliées on the poetry of Paul Verlaine. The songs were written for Miss Mary Garden, for whom he also wrote the role of Mélisande in his opera. A rare recording of the set features Debussy and Garden performing with complete, wild abandon and emotion. The cycle moves between quiet, intimate moments, and bombastic proclamations such as the end of this final movement.

In just a week and a half, I will be returning to Rochester to perform Poulenc’s Banalités and Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées with Samuel Ka-Ming Leung at the piano in Christ Church’s Candlelight Concert Series at 📌8:30 PM on Sunday, March 1st📌. I am excited to perform such personally meaningful music in such a magical setting, and to be returning to a musical environment that formed such a crucial part of my musical development during my time at Eastman. I am looking forward to singing this fabulous program, and to presenting a workshop for the Schola Cantorum choir.
