Orange dress crafted by my mom and I. With guidance by Kori-Leigh.
My mom sews. She makes beautiful clothes. I knew I wanted a dress made by my mom so I kept asking. My mom kept telling me “I need a pattern.” I don’t have patterns. My mom and I are figuring out how to make dancing outfits as we go.
Recently I was asked to dance for the Orange Shirt Day event in Calgary. So I bought the material I needed. My mom worked on creating a pattern. She must have sewed three trial dresses until we found a good size for me. Then she sewed the dress. We both decided on the cone placement. I did all the ties and put the cones on.
I wanted this orange dress to be heavy and have more cones than my first dress. I put @anishinaabebimishimo cones on this dress, they’re beautiful cones. I also wanted it as simple as possible. Because I dance old style, I like to keep it simple for now.
When I wear this dress it is for the children who did not make it home and the IRS survivors. It’s for all of us affected and hurt by these genocidal policies! Both of my parents are survivors. This is why we made a heavy dress. I wanted the prayers strong.
I’m really proud of my mom for sewing this dress for me. I think she is proud of it too. 🧡

Oki nikso’kowaiksi
I’d like to reintroduce myself.
My name is Sofia Eaglehead.
I am Blackfoot, Cree and Dené.
The nations I descend from are Siksika, Maskwacis and Tsuut’ina. And I am blessed to have good relations from these places. I am currently on a learning journey within academia with goals to one day become an educator. I often find myself educating others on simple topics around being First Nations, the history and contemporary issues we face.
I spent the last year completing my first year of my masters program. I also needed time to heal and recover from a sad heartbreak. This was a friendship I thought was meant to be lifelong. But sometimes things fall apart.
Finally, I am thankful for my traditions and the Blackfoot way of life. I am also thankful to be connected to my Cree and Tsuut’ina ways. I am blessed for the teachings I have received. A constant one is that we have to be kind to each other because life can be unkind and hard. We really don’t know what others are going through. I am thankful to everyone who expressed love and kindness to me this last year.
Sending y’all love and blessings
