Some artists play a room. Joseph Alton Miller holds it. For almost twenty years he has carried American roots music across the country, sharing stages with artists like Brandi Carlile and Richard Shindell, then carrying that same honesty into hip-hop rooms opening for Bone Thugs N Harmony and Robert Randolph. He never picked a lane. He learned how to listen between them. We first welcomed him to Sofar East Kensington in March 2022, and he never really left. He came back as a producer, as a photographer, as the quiet hand behind other artists’ songs at his Worn Out Joke Studio. His No Depression-nominated record “Songs of Travel for the Vagabond” and his newest self-recorded single “Porch” (released February 2025, written, mixed, mastered and photographed entirely by him) are proof of the same lesson: you can build the whole world yourself and still make it feel like home for someone else. That is why he is the latest addition to our Artist Spotlight series. Not because he is the loudest, but because he is steady. He shows up early, stays late, and reminds every room that folk and hip-hop, songwriter and producer, artist and documentarian can live in one person.
