Channel One started performing at Notting Hill Carnival in London in 1982. Set up by London’s Caribbean community, Notting Hill is one of the largest street festivals in the world.
Channel One is led by Mikey Dread, original selector, who plays a strictly vinyl selection from his one turn table.
Alongside Mikey Dread are various vocalists and MCs who compliment the music with Rastafarian singing and chanting. The current MCs are Macky Banton and Ras Sherby. Channel One play a unique selection of conscious reggae, exclusive dubplates and uplifting “steppas”.
The opening acts are @cassidyblaze a local reggae performer @innerstandingsound system from California and @nobletobal .
This all-ages session will be taking place at Vibes Connect a new music venue in Willow Creek, CA located at 107 Mayfair Street. Tickets are $20 at the door and the music starts at 7pm. Kids 6 and under are free.

Who was Warren Smith, founder of Sierra Nevada World Music Festival?
Warren Smith's work in reggae dates to the 1970s. Smith was an early reggae promoter and producer on the West Coast, having brought Dennis Brown, Big Youth, and Soul Syndicate to California for the first time during the 1970s. Spending extensive time in Jamaica in the 1970s, he produced the Island Music Festival in the Parish of Trelawny in 1978, the same year as the One Love Peace Concert.
As a manager and record producer, he worked closely with Soul Syndicate, issuing records Harvest Uptown, Famine Downtown and Love Is And Always on his Epiphany Records label. This period was documented in Jeremiah Stein’s excellent film about Soul Syndicate, Word, Sound, and Power (1979).
Smith was also the first producer to record on the 16-track tape machine at Jamaica’s famed Channel One studio when it was installed in 1979. Earl Zero’s Visions Of Love LP was the fruit of this labor. Greensleeves Records’ early catalog also includes two songs from Warren’s Channel One sessions (co-produced by Chinna Smith), Earl Zero’s “City Of The Wicked” and “Righteous Works.”
Warren sadly passed in 2021, and the festival went on hiatus. Then, on the Summer Solstice of 2023 it returned to celebrate Peace, Love & Music in the beautiful forests and rolling hills of Mendocino County once again, a tribute to Warren's legacy.
