Absolutely mesmerizing to watch an endangered species that we know very little about, feeding and living it's life. Seemingly unaware that it's life is at risk.
Why are they here? What are they feeding on? Where are they going? Will this one survive?

In 2022, Ocean Alliance became the first group in the world to deploy tags on whales using drones successfully. This method makes it easier to deploy more tags on more species of whales. It is a game-changer and is one of Ocean Alliance’s most significant contributions to whale science in our 50+ year history.

Today is #Endangeredspeciesday! Today we should remember the plight of the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. Here's a recap of our Instagram Right Whale tagging takeover last week #ifyoumissedit! You can also check out our archive of highlights as well anytime you'd like!
@stellwagenbanknms our research team is measuring for the presence of a smelly gas — dimethyl sulfide (DMS) — in Cape Cod Bay in order to better track critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whales. Follow along on a cruise day to see how we accomplish this! You can also read more about this work in the #linkinbio
Our work operates under NOAA NMFS permit #27272-01. It is against the law to approach or intercept within 500 yards of a right whale. If you find yourself within 500 yards of a right whale, give them space slowly and safely to help them survive and thrive. If you see a right whale in the wild call (866) 755-NOAA or report it on the Whale Alert App: whalealert.org

Using drones for less invasive health assessments of whales is the future of whale research, and the future is now.

Chris Zadra ‘16 ‘17G is advancing whale research across the globe 🌎🐋. As program manager for Ocean Alliance, he uses SnotBot® drones to collect whale blow for detailed biological studies. Zadra’s research provides valuable insights into whale behavior and their critical impact on ocean health and climate.

How does an idea become an innovation?
In 2022, Ocean Alliance demonstrated that we can deploy tags more effectively, safely, and non-invasively using drones. Our method represents a huge step forward for tagging. Since the program began, we have deployed over 100 tags on six whale species. This work uses a tool that revolutionized humanity’s understanding of whales and improved it considerably!
