Thanks to the awesome volunteers that joined us yesterday to help remove cattails from the boardwalk at Spring Lake!!! This was hard work, and they nailed it!

Huge shout out to the volunteers at today’s SMRF Trash Free Gulf clean up! We removed 1 1/2 truck-loads of trash out of Willow Springs Creek before it was able to reach the San Marcos River. If you’re interested in locating a Trash Free Gulf clean up, there will be many more this month all around Texas, so check it out! As always, huge shout out to @thetexasriversteward with @theeyesofthesmr for coordinating today’s event, to Lucas Negrete with THIC Threads for the Yerba Madre, and to The Gulf Coast Trust for creating this state-wide event!

This is going to be AWESOME when it’s done! The trail work on Hun Dun (between Dunbar City Park and Hunter/Wonder World) is really coming together! We’re finally spending the Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. grant money to get this trail built, in large part to our partnership with San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance (SMGA), the EAHCP, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the City of San Marcos. The trail will take another 12-18 months to complete, and is not yet open to the public, but if you’d like to volunteer to help SMGA’s trail crew, you can go to SMGreenbelt.org/volunteers/ to sign up!
Huge shout out to the dedicated volunteers that have worked tirelessly to plan, remove invasive species, order materials, prep the site, and so much more.

We are still In an extreme drought:
~the river in San Marcos has not been above 80 cfs for a meaningful time in almost 2 months.
-the river in SM has not been above 110 cfs for about a year now.
-the mean flow in SM is approx 170 cfs
-the work the Edwards Habitat Conservation Plan (EAHCP) does to improve the health of the river is cut back once the 10 day average hits 120 cfs, so they’ve been “treading lightly” (pun intended) on their work for years now.
-“cfs” = cubic feet per second, and it’s how the flow in rivers and streams are measured
We want to thank Kerbey Lane Cafe for choosing SMRF as their featured community partner for Q2 of 2026! Not only does the San Marcos store have the best view of the San Marcos River in town, but they want to prop up their local partners, so go show them some love!

If you’ve been thinking about installing a rain cistern, this post is for YOU! This 5,000 gallon cistern is 2/3 full after the week of rain that we’ve had, and the water will be used to water the garden and top off a small pool, as opposed to using city water from the tap. The City of San Marcos has a rebate program that will reimburse you up to $5,000, so the time is now!!! We’ll link the rebate program in our LinkTree, as well as the comments below. 🌧️ 🌼 🌲 💦

4:30 Today!!! We need folks to show up!
For those of you worried about excess water being granted to a golf course outside of Luling during a severe drought, here are the details of today’s Groundwater Conservation District meeting!!!
The situation is urgent…Texas coastal areas accumulate trash 10x faster than other Gulf Coast states
About 80% of aquatic plastics come from land-based sources
Every Texan lives in a watershed that drains to the Gulf
But joining our Trash Free Gulf campaign will help!60 cleanups across Texas watersheds (find a cleanup near you)
We’re recruiting 2,800 volunteers
And aiming to prevent 45,000 pounds of trash and 6,000 plastic bottles from ever reaching the Gulf
Who we need:
Wildlife, animal, and outdoor enthusiasts
Coastal and river community members
Fresh and saltwater anglers
Seafood lovers
Water conservation advocates
Anyone who appreciates the outdoors!
