OUT: Scotland's Queer Book Festival is coming to The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum on 17th October 2026!
We are so excited to bring the first Festival to such an iconic venue.
Home to incredible artifacts and archives including the world's first football, we hope you will be able to enjoy the free exhibitions alongside attending OUT.

We are delighted to present 'Shared Perspectives', a curated selection of photographic works by current Photography students at @fvcollege .
Developed in collaboration with The Smith, the exhibition engages with themes of memory, place, and perception, situating student practice within a broader contemporary photographic context.

NOW ON LOAN: two objects from The Smith Museum will be on display at Surgeons' Hall Museum!
The year 2026 marks 300 years since the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh was formed. Surgeons’ Hall Museum and the University have collaborated on a major new exhibition examining that history and what it continues to mean for medicine today.
The Smith Museum has loaned a hat (pictured) believed to have belonged to William Burke. The Museum has also loaned a piece of skin believed to have come from William Burke, which will be on display for the first time.
Burke, alongside his co-conspirator William Hare, murdered at least sixteen people to sell bodies to the anatomist Robert Knox for use in anatomy lectures. The murders exposed a medical culture in which consent was neither sought nor required.
Visit @surgeonshall from 3rd April 2026 to see the exhibition and to learn more about Edinburgh's medical past, present, and future.

Safeguarding Sudan’s Cultural Heritage – A Free Talk by Dr Habab Idriss Ahmed.
Sudan has been a crossroads of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern cultures for thousands of years, home to incredible civilizations like the Kingdom of Kush and the Nubian and Islamic kingdoms.
But since the outbreak of war in April 2023, many of Sudan's treasures have been damaged, looted, or left unprotected. Communities have been devastated, and countless artefacts are now at risk.
Join Dr Habab Idriss Ahmed at The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum to learn about Sudan’s extraordinary past and the urgent efforts needed to protect it today.
