@smithmelchizedek (Earl “Chinna” Smith) is one of Jamaica’s most influential and in-demand guitarists, known for shaping the sound of roots reggae from the late 1960s onward. Emerging in Kingston during a period of rapid musical development, he quickly became recognised for his fluid, expressive playing style, combining sharp rhythmic skank patterns with melodic lead lines that gave reggae guitar a more expansive emotional range. Smith’s early career developed alongside the rise of modern Jamaican studio culture. He became a key session musician, contributing to countless recordings during reggae’s golden era. He is closely associated with legendary studio bands such as Soul Syndicate, where his guitar work helped define the backbone of many classic riddims. His playing can be heard across sessions for major artists including Bob Marley & The Wailers, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, and Burning Spear, among many others. Rather than always being in the spotlight, Smith often worked as the understated force behind the music, shaping grooves that became foundational in reggae history. His style is marked by a deep sense of rhythm and restraint, often prioritising feel over technical flashiness. This approach made him a favourite among producers who valued groove and atmosphere. Over time, he also explored production and mentorship, helping to guide younger musicians and preserve the traditions of roots reggae. Beyond studio work, Smith has remained active as a performer and collaborator, contributing to projects that bridge classic reggae with dub, jazz, and contemporary sounds. His influence extends beyond Jamaica, with guitarists worldwide studying his phrasing and tone as part of the reggae canon. Today, Earl “Chinna” Smith is widely regarded not just as a session musician, but as a living architect of reggae guitar, whose work helped define the genre’s sound across multiple generations.
