Last month was a historical and awesome time! It was the Shadow Lounge Reunion and 25th Birthday of the Lounge.
The Shadow Lounge was key and formative in a lot of our lives here in Pittsburgh. It was a place of community. It was a place to refine, find and develop your craft. It was a place many of us called home, and still do.

When I saw DJ Big Phill (@djbigphill ) post a promotional video showing Tim Guthrie (@smilotography ) and Justin Strong (@dickie_leftfoot ) back together and planning a 25-Year Birthday Celebration for the Shadow Lounge (@slreunionpgh ), I thought it was great on a number of levels. Shortly thereafter I decided I wanted to be there in person.
They had asked for folks to share their old Shadow Lounge photos and videos and as I was gathering the files my thought process went from just attending to wanting to document this occasion on some level. I had big plans for multiple interviews, etc and then the day came and most of it went out the window. Aside from the rain, which caused delays and schedules to be shifted, I got caught up in the nostalgia. There were people at the event I hadn’t seen in person since even before I moved away from Pittsburgh. I was catching up with people and watching people catch up with other people, it was great. It felt like what made the Shadow Lounge special when it was around, it felt like community, it felt like love.
I was there from the setup to shutting down and I filmed a lot, but I planned on more. Regardless I wouldnt change a thing (aside from the rain, but I cant control that… yet) and I hope you enjoy my documentary style recap video. Spoken word by Ezra (@izrah1977 ). It’s @vexbrown day if you ain’t know. Happy Heavenly Birthday to one of the realest we knew. I thought a lot about him leading up to the @slreunionpgh as he kept popping up in long lost pics because he would have most definitely been there and would have blessed the wheels and the dance floor and the alley with us one more time. When I saw his youngest running around in the rain last Saturday I broke down in a way I wasn’t ready for. But in that way Vex WAS right there with us. We were missing his right hand man @nardosays that day too. But the memories in shadow and Ava and blue room will always be there for us. The man that made us forget the days troubles when he spun and say “Damn” to some ill ass blend or some remix he made or found. We miss you man. We love you. May you eternally rest in beats. ❤️🕊️🔊
Via @jmallspgh . Join us tonight at Lorelei (formerly Shadow Lounge), as we continue to celebrate Shadow Lounge’s 25th birthday. TONIGHT, for ONE NIGHT ONLY, we’ll be revisiting INTERVAL MONDAY, which ran at AVA Lounge from Monday, July 9th, 2007 until, I believe, March of 2013. Next Monday, the Monday after 4th of July, would actually be Interval’s 18th birthday. We had a long run and we did what they said couldn’t be done, bringing a truly diverse crowd out each week, which was FULL of young people, to enjoy one of Pittsburgh’s most culturally rich pastimes, LIVE JAZZ MUSIC. We apologize for the short notice. We hope to see many of the original Interval Monday patrons, as well as new faces, this evening at Lorelei. Big shout out to Peter, Maddie, Bonnie and the rest of the Lorelei staff for allowing this to happen. There’s no cover this evening. Shadow Lounge 25th birthday merch will still be available. T-Funk will be hosting. I’ll be spinning Jazz vinyl 6-7 PM, and during breaks. Howie Alexander will lead a trio, feat. Jevon Rushton & Glyn from 7-10 PM. I keep wanting to wax poetic about so many things on how I’ve gotten to this place and how much I wanted to celebrate our beloved little Lounge on its 25th bday but I also have a todo list that won’t quit. So for now just sharing one more random moment that I didn’t expect to see happen as I came around the bend. #shadow25
Looking back I just realized I shot and edited both the 25th and 10 year anniversary video for the Shadow Lounge! 10th and 25th … is crazy !!
This weekend, we’re celebrating 25 years since the doors first opened with a block party at the original location!!! I feel privileged to have been there from the beginning—this place truly holds a special place in my heart. So many memories from those late nights … if you were not there, I can’t expect you to understand.
I’m DJing and co-hosting the block party on Saturday, and trust me, going to be 🔥🔥. There is no telling who all is going to pop up. I can’t wait to reconnect with my people, especially those I haven’t seen in years! Saturday is going to be special. We are just a few more days away from the big 25th Birthday Celebrations for Shadow lounge. Make sure to let your people know its happening this Saturday! June 28th starting at 4pm.
We want to take this opportunity to clear up a few things regarding the tickets and after parties. Originally we wanted to allow for as many people to attend as possible but quickly realized that there would be too many people at the block party to fit inside the old lounge space. So we limited the tickets that we can guarantee entry too. But of course not all those people will be staying into the night as it gets later and later. SO then we released a second batch of tickets for the block party and added a second Afterparty at TANA Ethiopian cuisine (5929 Baum )about 100 yards away so folks that are waiting for access to the lounge space afterparty have somewhere to go in the meantime. Depending on the music you might want to bounce in between and that’s fine if the venues are not at capacity.
Summary:
All tickets can access the lounge space during the block party up to about 9:30.
All tickets grant access to both after parties but Early bird tix and AP Guaranteed tix have priority entry at 10pm.
Currently we are not selling door tickets to just the after party but that is subject to change and if it does we will update you here.

So another year around the sun tomorrow. ☀️ Mom always reminded me when younger that I got the longest day of the year to celebrate my Birthday on the solstice. That was a decent flex for an 8 year old. Won’t be hearing that tomorrow in what feels like the longest week of the year. However I am grateful that I will be creating music with friends amongst family in the sun to start my day. Join us if you can.
