132 people supported into housing. That is not just a number. It means 132 people had the chance to move away from rough sleeping, crisis, street-based vulnerability and daily uncertainty. It also means less pressure on public services. National research has estimated that someone sleeping rough for 12 months can cost public services over £20,000 per person. On that basis, supporting 132 people into housing could represent a potential reduction of more than £2.6 million in public service pressure, if those people had otherwise remained rough sleeping for a year. This is why the Prebend Centre matters. It is often the first door people walk through when they have nowhere else to turn. From that one door, people can access food, showers, healthcare, clothing, advice, casework and support into housing. The SMART 500 campaign is about keeping that door open. By becoming one of 500 regular donors, your monthly gift helps us continue this vital work in Bedford. Small monthly donations. Big local impact.

New research led by King’s College London has found that sexual minority people who have experienced homelessness face significantly worse mental health outcomes than their heterosexual peers. The study found that lesbian, gay and bisexual people were more likely to have experienced homelessness, with bisexual people particularly affected. It also found that common mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression, were highest among sexual minority people with a history of homelessness. The rate rose to 72.4%, compared with 49.2% among heterosexual people who had experienced homelessness. The research also points to the impact of bullying and discrimination. Over 41% of sexual minority people with a history of homelessness reported discrimination, compared with 25.9% of heterosexual people with a history of homelessness. These findings matter because homelessness is rarely just about housing. It is often linked with trauma, rejection, discrimination, poor mental health and barriers to support. We know how important it is that people can access safe, non-judgemental support when they need it most. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, listened to properly and supported as a whole person. Homelessness support must recognise the different experiences people bring with them, especially when those experiences include rejection, discrimination or feeling unsafe in the services meant to help. No one should be left without support because of who they are.

Kate’s Place started again last Wednesday, and it was wonderful to welcome women back into this safe and supportive space. Kate’s Place is our women-only service, where women support women. It offers a calm, welcoming environment for women to access practical help, wellbeing support, healthcare and advice without judgement. At our welcome back session, 10 women attended. Two blood tests were carried out, sexual health screening was available, and there were lots of wellbeing activities for women to take part in. We were also joined by P2R, who worked alongside SMART staff to support the ladies attending. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the session feel welcoming, respectful and supportive. Kate’s Place is back, and our door is open.

Over 20 years ago, Pauline and Sonia, one of our team, worked together and were both pregnant at the same time. Pauline went on to give birth to her youngest son, Aaron. After having daughters, Pauline and her husband were overjoyed to welcome their little boy into the world. Aaron had a kind heart and cared deeply about helping others. Although he sadly passed away far too young, his kindness continues to be remembered in a very special way. Each year, on Aaron’s birthday, Pauline makes a donation to SMART in his memory. It is a beautiful tribute to Aaron and a generous act that helps us support people in our community. Thank you, Pauline, for continuing to honour Aaron’s memory in such a meaningful way. His kindness lives on through the help given to others.

We were incredibly proud to see @BedfordWhoCharityConvention recognised as a finalist at last night’s Bedford Independent Everyday Heroes Awards held at the Quarry Theatre. To be recognised for the impact Bedford Who Charity Con continues to have in our community is such a fantastic achievement, and one that is so well deserved. Over the years, the event has raised an incredible amount to support SMART and the people who access our services, helping us continue delivering vital support across Bedford. We are hugely grateful to everyone involved for their ongoing support, dedication and belief in what we do. The difference Bedford Who Charity Con continues to make for local people facing homelessness and hardship cannot be overstated. Pictured are Andy, Duvessa, Anthony and our Chair of Trustees, Simon, in the Quarry Theatre gardens.

May is Local and Community History Month. Every community has its story. The people, the places, and the support that holds everything together. In Bedford, the Prebend Centre is part of that story. Every day, people come through our door for food, support, healthcare, and a place to feel safe. For many, it is a turning point. Local charities like SMART are rooted in the communities they serve. We see the challenges up close, and we are here to respond when it matters most. If you need support, our door is open.

500 people. One door. A lifeline for Bedford. We’re not asking one person to do everything. We’re asking 500 people to do something. A monthly gift to The SMART 500 helps keep the Prebend Centre open for people facing homelessness, poverty, crisis and isolation in Bedford. Behind our door, people can find food, showers, clean clothing, healthcare, housing support, advice, day beds and someone who will listen. It is not just a donation. It is a way of keeping the door open for someone who may have nowhere else to turn. Join The SMART 500 today: .uk/smart-500/

New figures show the scale of homelessness is still rising. Over 134,000 households are now living in temporary accommodation, including more than 176,000 children. Behind these numbers are people stuck in unsuitable conditions, often for far too long. The message from the sector is clear. Ending homelessness cannot sit with one department alone. It requires action across government, systems that prioritise prevention, and proper investment in the services people rely on every day. At SMART, we see how quickly things can spiral, but also how the right support, at the right time, can change everything. This is why local, frontline services matter. And why we must keep pushing for a system that prevents homelessness, not just responds to it.

This year’s Deaf Awareness Week runs from 4th–10th May 2026, with the theme: Right to understand – Together, we break barriers. At SMART, we know how important communication is when someone is facing homelessness, crisis, or vulnerability. Being able to ask for help, explain your situation, and feel understood can make all the difference. For many Deaf people, barriers to communication can lead to isolation, reduced access to essential services, and fewer opportunities to access the right support at the right time. That is why partnerships matter. Through our valued partnership with Specsavers Bedford, regular hearing tests and eye tests are carried out at the Prebend Centre, helping people access essential healthcare in a familiar and supportive environment. For many of the people we support, attending appointments elsewhere can be difficult. Bringing these services directly into the Prebend Centre helps remove barriers and ensures more people can get the support they need. This week is about raising awareness, improving accessibility, and making sure everyone has equal access to services, support, and opportunities. Everyone deserves the right to be heard, understood, and included. Together, we can help create a more accessible and compassionate community. #DeafAwarenessWeek #RightToUnderstand #Accessibility #Inclusion #SMARTCJS #CommunitySupport

For nearly two years, one gentleman we support had been sleeping rough and would not consider moving into accommodation. Building trust took time, patience, and consistency. Our caseworker, Sofia, never gave up. She kept supporting him, kept listening, and slowly helped him begin to see that things could be different. When his PIP claim was declined, Sofia supported him through the appeal process and fought for the outcome he deserved. Together, they won. Recently, he came back to the Prebend Centre with a box of chocolates and a thank you card. It was a simple gesture, but it meant everything. Moments like this remind us that real change often starts with trust, persistence, and someone refusing to give up on you. #SMARTCJS #HomelessnessSupport #RealImpact #ChangingLives #PrebendCentre
