The second day after the shark encounter was also a good downwind day in Santa Barbara but we didn’t trust the wind/bumps as far west as UCSB campus point. We (me, Larame @da_greenes , Burke @burke.green , Aakaash @dawnofmidi , Ben, and Tavis @smallwavetav ) launched off the Mesa in Santa Barbara and went to Carpentaria for a shorter 12 mile run. It was another beautiful run and our cameras came up empty on sharks. However, Larame crossed over and saw a shark as he came into the Padero area and into our landing in Carpentaria. In the second video you can see my foil and what the shark, two days prior, would have been listening to and chasing. A couple of weeks prior to the shark encounter I scratched my tail foil on a coral reef in Maui. All my friends could hear my foil whistling pretty loudly as we surfed together. I tried to sand out the scratches but apparently it still has a noticeable whistle. Did it contribute to attracting the shark? @kalamaperformance 8-6 Gator LP @f4foilswing Orca 800/S135 @vaikobi @kaohileash @blackprojectsup

The day after the shark encounter was another good downwind day in Santa Barbara. It was unspoken but those of us that were available to go didn’t want the shark incident to keep us out of the water. Surprisingly there were five of us (myself, Burke @burke.green , Larame @da_greenes , Colin @colinhyatt11 , and Tavis @smallwavetav ) that wanted to go. I think we just wanted to get the jitters out and return to our normal programming, we ended up doing the same 19 mile run from Goleta to Carpinteria. If you compare my plot I did take a more inside line to where the shark was the day before, see drawn box. Two days prior to the shark incident I was doing paddle practice (paddling up on foil) at East Beach. As I was sitting on my board and leisurely paddling out a whale surfaced and spouted about 30 feet straight in front of me. The water visibility was bad and I couldn’t see it as it sounded so I turned course away and slowly paddled. It came up right next to me again and spouted and then again a third time. It was an amazing event and I was so bummed that I didn’t have a camera. Then two days later on the Shark event day I didn’t have a camera again! OK so this day after the Shark day I certainly had a camera. It was a good run but fortunately or unfortunately it was a normal uneventful run. @kalamaperformance 8-6 Gator LP @f4foilswing Orca 800/S135 @vaikobi @blackprojectsup @kaohileash

Here’s a photo off the internet that looks like what I saw from my foil board. I rotated and cropped the photo to show what I clearly saw of the shark. When I looked back and down at the shark I didn’t get a view of the nose because it was underneath the tail of my board. Then in the rear I didn’t clearly see the shark from the trailing edge of its dorsal fin and back because it was all white water from the dorsal fin back. I’ve seen many Blue sharks from the boat and this shark had a much wider girth like a typical White or Mako shark. The color of the shark was like this photo, I remember thinking it was dark blue and not grey looking from the top.

We had a monster clearing wind a few weeks back. Was maxing out the Lift 130 (800sq/cm) and got completely eaten by a rolling wave. The following clip was from @dawnofmidi who was filming from the Mesa.

After a 3 year social media hiatus, I’m back for this exciting moment. Ron and I were on a downwind foil run from UCSB to Carpinteria on Saturday and had this curious critter pursue Ron. For the full, higher quality video, check out my YouTube in my bio. Filmed on a GoPro Hero 13 Black @gopro
