These pictures were taken 13 days apart (Pict. 1 on Sept. 29th, 2018 & Pict. 2 on Sept. 16th, 2018)
It rained twice in that timeframe. Whenever it rains, the rubbish that is disposed off on the shores, in connecting canals, and at the Ashaiman Motorway stop, all get washed downstream into this estuary.
The dark pile is the old plastic and the white pile is plastic that flowed downstream as a result of the rains

In 2018 we started documenting life in our our city (Tema, Ghana). In our journey of documenting we found that there was some significant pollution and ecological damage to the water bodies across the city. The worst of which was in the Sakumo Lagoon, which is also a #Ramsar site and ecosystem for wildlife, and runs parallel to the city of Tema.
We enlisted the help of the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies at the University of Legon to analyze sediment and water samples from the lagoon and its estuaries. What we found was sickening.
In our 3-year journey of gathering information and trying to work with government institutions like the Tema Municipal Assembly, Forestry Commission and the Tema Development Corporation, we realized that we had to take the reins on this issue and at least bring more awareness to the problem.
Our hope is that the more of us that know and care about this, the more work we can do together to solve these problems. This site is only but one example of what is happening to our environment in Ghana.
