Happy #FishFriday! This week’s fish is the American Eel. Eels start life in the Sargasso Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Bermuda, and travel on ocean currents to rivers along the East Coast to live and return to the sea to spawn. Fish with this life cycle pattern are known as catadromous fish. When young eels - known as “glass eels” reach the Hudson River, only a few inches long and are transparent except for their dark eyes and red gills. Glass eels quickly develop pigment and become small “elvers,” and then develop into larger eels while living in the Hudson and its tributaries, which are then called “yellow eels. American eels can live more than twenty years and reach lengths of over three feet. Shortly before they leave the Hudson to return to the Sargasso Sea, their color becomes dark and silvery. Come aboard the Clearwater this season and meet the fish of the Hudson River in our fish tank! Come sailing: /public-sails/

Saturday evening famed Irish singer, songwriter, and social activist Tommy Sands played a sold out Clearwater benefit concert @garvansnewpaltz . Betty and the Baby Boomers opened the show, and joined Tommy for the final number, closing the night out with Your Daughters and Your Sons. A warm Clearwater thank you to Tommy Sands for playing, and @garvansnewpaltz for hosting and donating the space. 2026 marks the 60th anniversary since the pass-the-hat folk picnic fundraisers to build the Clearwater began. This show was the second in a series of fundraising concerts to support our continued efforts to protect the Hudson River and steward an intergenerational community of river advocates through education, advocacy, sailing, and music. Join us on July 11 at @thelocalsaugerties for our next benefit featuring @jennanicholls - tix at the link in our bio!

Long overdue bucket list item ✅ Took a ride on the Clearwater—the boat that music built. 💚 So special to listen to the the crew and their passion for the Hudson River. Things started rainy but cleared as we sailed. Bummed we didn’t get to listen to the music of @amberrubarth due to the soggy weather but the crew got everyone singing. I still hope to catch an Amber performance another time. I was on Peak to help raise the mainsail—and yes—it’s heavy! But we sang our shanty and made it happen—even the little people pulled their weight. New appreciation for the crew when they haul those ropes alone. And while the whole crew was incredible, I’m giving an extra shout out to intern @nualaseabrook on her upcoming graduation from SUNY Cortland @sunycortland I spent a year and a half there before I transferred back in the 80s. Nuala, it was so lovely to share your last sail with you and hear you sing. ❤️ And yes—that flock of birds was flying in fish formation. 🐟 if you ever get the chance to ride the @sloopclearwater do it! It’s a #poppinspicks

Here’s your fish of the week! White perch are abundant in the tidal Hudson from northern Manhattan all the way to Albany, with peak numbers in the mildly salty parts of the estuary. The average white perch is six to ten inches long and weighs less than one pound. Generally, this fish is silver-green or bronze in color, lacking the distinct stripes of its near relative, the striped bass. They are commonly caught by anglers fishing from shore. Like other Hudson fish, they are contaminated with PCBs, and the NYSDOH - New York State Health Department maintains guidance on who can safely consume how much white perch from where in the river and at what frequency. Learn more about who can eat what fish, from where in the river, and how much at the link in our bio.🔗
