Our ‘Ascend/Descend’ split record with our Swedish sweethearts Domkraft came out today 4 years ago. When we heard their ‘End of Electricity’ record we were floored, and the thought that we would one day not only share a release but also cover one another’s music really would have seemed impossible. Here we are a decade later, having shared the stage in three different countries, and getting to count these legends as friends. Day 1 of recording at @starttogetherstudio here in Belfast. All drums and 90% of the guitars done, a very productive day! Thanks as always to our producer @rockyoreilly - at this stage we’ve lost count of the number of records we’ve made together, and we hugely appreciate not only his knowledge and input, but also the hours he puts in before we arrive to ensure the session is smooth, relaxed and fun. We played @barkotelo in Finland recently and saw this sticker in the toilets. Long ago (last century!) Marty and David were 2/3 of a band called The Cosmonaut. One demo, an English tour with our heroes The Kabinboy ( including the legendary Heavyfest in Bradford’s 1-in-12, alongside the incredible Sloth and Khang!) and that was it. That band transformed into a three piece called The Naut where the lads were joined by Chris on second guitar. This line up played a few shows as an instrumental guitar/guitar/drums before adding a bass player and singer, which ultimately led to a split and the birth of Slomatics Mki. Those early shows as a three piece really was proto-Slomatics, and were a lot of fun. There’s footage somewhere on Youtube of that line-up playing the final Warzone fest in Belfast, a moment which still resonates with us now as a foundational experience. Fun fact: The song ‘Son of Ampbreaker’ from our cassette release ‘The Future Past’ is a reworking of ‘Ampbreaker’ by the Naut, a song about our friend Leo O’Sullivan drunkenly falling over but somehow not breaking Chris’ Fender Bassman amp at a particularly raucous gig in Cork around 2001. 15 years ago today we played a launch show here in Belfast for a split cassette release we did with local punks Comply or Die. Well, two-thirds of us did, due to a guitarist’s wife being in labour. Power duo! We recorded the two songs on the cassette in the same session as the songs for the Conan split. This turned out to be a pivotal session in many ways; our first time in @starttogetherstudio with @rockyoreilly producing, the record with Conan which really opened things up for us, and also the realisation that there was no way forward with the Mki line-up, leading to @marty.slomatics joining us within a couple of months. We’d be back in the studio within 6 months to record the ‘a hOcht’ album, and here we are 15 years later looking forward to going back again in a few weeks to make another record.
