when I was 24, just starting out in my career, I had the absolute joy and privilege of working with the amazing, the scarily talented Haydn Gwynne.
We worked together putting on a tiny show, you probably have never heard of it, called “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”. I stared at her like this a lot. She was magnetic. You couldn’t take your eyes off her. She was just absolutely brilliant. I was in awe.
One day at lunch she saw me in the green room removing the cress from my Pret egg & cress sandwich.
“You don’t like cress??” She exclaimed.
“No, why would you want a load of fucking weeds on your butty?”
“They’re not weeds” she replied laughing “cress is wonderful, you should give it a go, it’s nice. Got a very peppery flavour. Do you not even like watercress?”
I think at this point I just stared at her blankly, as a 24 year old boy from Wigan had clearly never heard of watercress.
She was right however, I now love cress.
I hadn’t seen her in a few years, but whenever I did she was always so happy to see me, and I her. She was so warm, kind and wickedly funny. I loved our chats about Midsomer Murders, she knew I was obsessed! She was a gorgeous person. She dazzled on the stage, and sparkled off it. She was fabulous. I will miss her.
Farewell Haydn, and thank you for everything 🖤
