In collaboration with the @yyc_arabarts , @bassemhafez_ our CCIS Diversity Education Lead, Dr Sinela Jurkova, hosted Rooted in Two Cultures: Arab Experiences in Canada—a space to pause, reflect, and share what it means to carry Arab heritage while building life in Canada.
We were honoured to hear remarks from @rizkallamoness , Board Chairperson and co‑founder of the Calgary Arab Arts and Culture Society, and to experience the many ways culture and storytelling came alive throughout the gathering.
From live oud music by @aya.mhana and poetry by Raghad Huseein @raghadphd to a moving photo exhibit of olive plantations in Palestine by Mohammed Hajj Ahmad of @littlebigstory.photography , every moment invited connection.
Participants also enjoyed watching their names take shape through live Arabic calligraphy by @salwa.calligraphy . Reflections shared by @sleman.dib Board Member of @yyc_arabarts , added even more depth to conversations around belonging, memory, and resilience.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this gathering such a meaningful celebration of culture and community.

من هذا السؤال بدأت رحلتي.
اليوم، وأنا أقدّم إقرارًا بالأرض بالعربية، أفعل ذلك بصفتي أول من قام بهذه الخطوة. إنها لحظة تاريخية بالنسبة لي، ليس في ألبرتا فقط، بل، حسب علمي، أيضًا في كندا عمومًا.
أقدّم هذه الكلمات بتواضع واحترام، لا بديلاً عن أصوات الشعوب الأصلية، بل كضيف على هذه الأرض ,مستمعًا، متعلّمًا، ومُكرمًا لرعايتهم المستمرة للأرض.
هذا الإقرار هو فعل امتنان وتواصل، وتقدير عميق للشعوب الأصلية التي اعتنت بهذه الأرض منذ زمنٍ سحيق وما زالت حتى اليوم.
أقدّم هذا الإقرار بروح الاحترام والتعلّم.
Have you ever wondered how a land acknowledgement might be offered in Arabic?
From that question, my journey began.
Today, as I offer a land acknowledgement in Arabic, I do so as the first person to take this step. It is a historic moment for me, not only in Alberta, but to my knowledge, also across Canada.
I offer these words with humility and respect, not as a replacement for the voices of Indigenous peoples, but as a guest on this land ,listening, learning, and honoring their ongoing stewardship.
This acknowledgement is an act of gratitude and connection, a deep appreciation for the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this land since time immemorial and continue to do so today.
I offer this acknowledgement in the spirit of respect and learning.
