Silver Eye is thrilled to present an afternoon with artist Aaron Turner (@aturn_arkdelta ) on the occasion of his new book Moves from the Archive (@sleeper_studio 2023). Aaron will share his work, in conversation with @kilololuckett (@alma_lewis_pgh
Moves from the Archive is the latest expression of a long-term project, Black Alchemy in which the artist creates and photographs physical tableau through which he explores and repositions figures in Black history, working with abstraction and ideas from music. Don't miss this opportunity to hear directly from one of the most original and innovative artists working with photography today. Aaron will also be bringing a selection of photobooks that have influenced him to open up discussion.
We just launched the first iteration of what will be a monthly feature called Nightstand. It’s an abridged snapshot of things we’re listening to, watching, reading and looking at.
For this first collection, we’re sharing a selections of Sleepers from the inimitable collection of @robert_e._jackson , a playlist of music we’ve been listening to, the astounding and beautiful first scene of Bela Tarr’s Werckmeister Harmonies and a downloadable pdf of Okwui Enwezor’s seminal essay Archive Fever, which explores how artists have engaged with photographic archives and documents.

Here’s an animation illustrating how the die cut, tri-folded cover of @aturn_arkdelta ’s forthcoming book “Moves From the Archive” unfolds and retracts. This was the concept of our talented designer @elanaschlenker who found the perfect material form for the idea of layering and recombination that occurs so beuatifully and poetcially in Aaron’s work.
