WIP - "10,500 Points of Light" - urethane foam, slavaged wooden factory column, wooden matches
After milling the wooden factory column I shaped the "match head" from urethane foam. Then the process of pressing one wooden match after another wooden match into the foam started.
The first time I used wooden matches as a sculpture material was with this piece titled "Fire Arms" in 2017. Not being an especially hyper masculine man, I have unintentionally found myself in hyper masculine environments. Five people in my life are gone because of guns. While each person's story was different, they were all male. Realizing there was no space to grieve, process or talk about how to keep ourselves safe, I created a project where we could talk about these things. Our conversations were based on art making from the mold of a gun I disabled. Since this early sculpture from the project, we have made connections with Gun Safety Groups, made friends, shared our stories and listened to others. It has been healing through art.
The Princes 2 Kings program had a full circle moment on Saturday. For years P2K students have toured the University of RI. Our hosts have been members of the BOND (Brothers On a New Direction) organization. This year one of the BOND Brothers giving us the tour was Christian Fernendez, a former P2K member who took the tour with P2K when he was in high school! Thanks to Djribyll, Maxwell and Christian for another great tour of URI!
WIP - Years & years ago I salvaged several 100+ year old wooden factory columns from a pile of ruble. It took this long to visulaize the sculptures they could become. From the first cut of the chain saw the scent of fresh cedar filled the room. Some things take time.
Apparently you can see a Hooded Merganser foraging along the river bottom when you're walking over a bridge. IRL the world is beautiful, no filter needed.
Thank you Caribbean Soul Catering for hosting the P2K (Princes 2 Kings) Southside Chefs program. The fruit salad recipe was delicious for even our picky eaters. We appreciate you for investing your time and knowledge in our people! #princes2kings #p2k #southsidechefs #investinpeople
The Princes 2 Kings program is excited to continue our Metal Lab program in collaboration with the Steelyard! Here students learn basic Metal Fabrication skills while creating a sculpture that communicates how they feel about gun violence. Session three of eight sessions starts tonight! #P2K #providenceboysandgirlsclubs #steelyard #risca #princes2kings
