Childhood Unscripted
Children live in a world we often forget as adults a world where fear takes a backseat, and joy is found in the simplest things: a puddle of rainwater, a discarded cloth, a stray cricket ball, or a hammock tied to nowhere. Their laughter is louder than worry, their imagination knows no bounds, and their happiness comes without conditions.
They remind us that life’s beauty lies in small, simple moments, and love doesn’t have to be complicated. Yet, in the rush of adulthood, we forget this. We judge, we overthink, we measure our worth. Children simply are. They play, they fall, they rise again, and they do it all with pure, unfiltered joy.
On this World Children’s Day, let’s pause and remember to be curious, to be playful, to embrace simplicity, to love without condition, and to notice the beauty in ordinary things. The world doesn’t just need adults it needs the heart of a child in all of us. 💛

Just 120 km from Mumbai, Dapurmal isn’t behind it’s been left behind
To a drone’s eye, Dapurmal sits like a forgotten dot in northern Thane just 122 km from Mumbai, yet worlds apart.
Perched on a hilltop, this Adivasi hamlet of 250 people exists far beyond the reach of basic infrastructure that most of India takes for granted.
There’s no road.
No clinic.
No piped water.
And beyond Grade 4, no school.
Children trek 9 km daily to continue their education in a neighbouring village. Men walk the same route for daily-wage work. The only shopkeeper hauls supplies on foot. And the lone teacher, Santosh Keru Bondre, walks 4 hours round-trip every alternate day to teach all grades in a villager’s home, because the actual school has crumbled.
In Dapurmal, walking is survival.
🚨 The sick must be carried on makeshift stretchers through dense forest to reach a health centre in Kasara, three hours away. Women in labour have delivered babies mid-trek. Many leave the village weeks before giving birth, just to be safe.
💧 Water? It’s a 6 km journey 3 km each way to the Upper Vaitarna Dam. Ironically, this dam serves Mumbai, but not Dapurmal. Women carry heavy containers uphill, battling scorching heat or pounding monsoon rain.
⛈️ Monsoon brings short-lived relief through rainwater harvesting but also turns paths treacherous with loose stones and slippery slopes.
⚡ Electricity arrived just two years ago. Now, cellphones, a TV, offer glimpses of the outside world. But there is still no road, no healthcare, and no running water.
📍I stayed in Dapurmal for three days walking their trails, witnessing their lives. What I saw was more than hardship. It was resilience a community surviving on strength, not support. They don’t want handouts. They want access.
🛤️ Dapurmal doesn’t need charity. It needs a road. Because a road is not just a path it’s a lifeline.

ADIVASI WOMEN & GIRLS TREK 4 HOURS FOR WATER JUST 120 KM FROM MUMBAI
In Dapurmal, a remote Adivasi village perched above the Upper Vaitarna Dam, water is everywhere, except where it’s needed.
Each summer, when their only rain-fed source runs dry, women and young girls walk 6–8 kilometres through steep, unforgiving terrain just to bring back a single pot of water.
This is not a choice.
This is survival.
These images follow that four-hour journey, from the first light of dawn to the final, exhausting climb back home.
A six-year-old girl, Jaagruthi, steadies a munda on her head. Here, childhood doesn’t begin with play it begins with responsibility.
They walk in silence through forests and hills.
They pause midway, sipping water from cups folded out of fallen leaves small relief in a long, punishing journey.
The descent is dangerous. Loose rocks. Crumbling paths. One misstep can mean a fall.
And then comes the hardest part
the climb back.
With pots of water balanced on their heads, they walk uphill under the harsh sun!
while behind them, the vast Upper Vaitarna reservoir glistens.
A cruel irony.
A village surrounded by water
yet forced to fight for every drop.
This is not just a water crisis.
This is a childhood stolen.
This is resilience pushed to its limits.

SHE CARRIES TOMORROW
With a child cradled in one arm and toys for sale in the other, a mother walks through the crowded lanes of Dadar market in Mumbai ahead of Mother’s Day carrying not just the weight of survival, but the quiet strength, sacrifice and unconditional love that defines motherhood every single day.

Life Along the Arabian Sea
Against the backdrop of Mumbai’s soaring skyline and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, fishermen at Worli Koliwada begin another day of relentless labour hauling freshly caught prawns ashore, mending nets, sorting the day’s catch and battling heat, tides and uncertainty to keep one of the city’s oldest coastal traditions alive. Along the Arabian Sea, the rhythm of survival continues for the Koli community, whose lives remain deeply tied to the waters they call home.

I did not just walk into a gallery that day.
I walked into the frames that raised me.
I did not just grow up seeing his photographs.
I grew up learning how to see through them.
For years, he was light and shadow to me
teaching patience, truth, and how to feel before the frame.
And then, one day, I stood there.
with the man who shaped my way of seeing.
Quiet. Gentle. Surrounded by his own stories.
These images I share Chennai, 2012.
A moment I didn’t fully understand then,
but one I now carry with deep gratitude.
I was fortunate! beyond words.
To receive Photographer of the Year three times
for my country, from his hands.
That was never just an award.
It was a blessing.
A passing of light.
On April 26, 2026, we lost a legend. @raghurai.official
But some photographers don’t leave!
they live on in every honest frame we dare to make.
Sir, your images shaped my journey.
Rest in light. ❤️🙏🏻@# @raghurai.official
In the Smoke, They Carry On

FOREST PRODUCE MAKES ITS WAY TO CITY
Before sunrise, they are already on the move.
Through silent forest roads in Shahapur, these tribal women walk nearly 10 kilometers heads steady under the weight of their world towards a distant railway station near Mal, on Mumbai’s edge. By the time the city wakes, they have already fought distance, heat, and fatigue.
What they carry is more than forest produce mahua flowers, tendu leaves, wild fruits, medicinal herbs, forest honey. They carry survival. Dignity. Generations of knowledge.
From forest paths to crowded trains, from rural silence to urban markets their journey is unseen, yet essential.
This is not just livelihood.
This is resilience in motion.
